Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone has used, and their feedback, a S&S reed valve breather on an EVO?
I was going to order the metal S&S breather gear but this valve is a better idea as there is no rotating parts.
Thanks in advance Rob. D. |

G'day Bob,
I have one in the FXR and I am happy with it. I put it in when I did a top end rebuild last year. I have noticed one little issue that I didnt have before, and that is that if I start it and ride it only for a few seconds, for example, just taking it from the driveway into the garage, it dumps out a lot of oil from the breather (which I have disconnected and rerouted to come out under the bike) after I turn it off. I have learnt to overcome this problem, by making sure everytime I start it I let it run for at least a full 30 secs. or more and there is no problem. One thing you want to check though is whether yours is an early Evo like mine which is a bottom breather (breathes out through a hose in the crankcase), or a late model Evo which is a top breather(breathes through the heads), because when I bought mine the tech said that they work better on one than on the other, because the breathing systems work on totally different principles(sorry, cant remember which he said, I think he said they work better on the late model Evo's, but dont quote me on it, my memory is shot these days(LOL)) He said they work on some bikes and not on others for some inexplicable reason, so, I just bought it anyhow, and thought I would give it a try, and if it didnt work, I would change it back, no biggie, but, it has worked fine. Hope this helps. |

OK thanks FXR. I've done a lot of searching and couldn"t find any reports. Mine is a 94 head breather, so, should work. Previously I've had a 92 dresser which had a crank breather. On this I fitted a Hayden in line reed valve to which I found excellent. Went from Pt. Pirie to Balladonia WA. in a day at mainly 150KPH and bike ran like a clock. This S&S should ideally work as good(Hayden"s don't work on H/breas.)and get rid of an internal revolving part. Getting back to your bike, HD stated over 20 years ago that the block head should be warmed up for 3-5 mins. B4 riding. This allows the engine to grow(expansion) and then ridin for 20-30 miles B4 operating temp. is reached then do another 30+miles just to justify taking the bike out. Not doing this, not changing oil and low idle are the 3 biggest killers of EVO's. Thanks again Rob. D. |

Yes I know that Rob, it does it even when it is hot, basically every time it starts whether hot or cold, it will do it if I turn it off before 30 secs or so. And yes I have an inline reed valve as well, had it for years. |

Hey Bob, i have had an S&S reed valve in my 01 TC 95" dyna, since they first came out, i rev this motor to 7,200 never had oil out the crank breather, never had a problem, it felt stronger frpm 2,500 to about 3,500 to me when i first fitted it, i road it 80,000k+ on the street through four states. its still there.
but have still got the stock oil pump too ( i should say, second stock oil pump ) ( as i twisted my flywheels, that stuffed the oil pump but the S&S reeds still ok ) |

G'day Krash,
You probably wouldnt have any problems, because I have heard that they work brilliantly on TC's , but are hit and miss on Evo's(for some inexplicable reason some evos like them some dont) |

Hey FXRfreak, only diff i can see is twinkies have them???? one way valves up in the heads. the reed valves just let pressure out of crank case and stop it from returning. so could possibly let motor rev freeer, and possibly help ring seal. but i'm just guessing.
i used to have a shovel & it was a crank breather, i put a one way valve on the breather hose and the old shovel loved it, it works a bit like the one way umberella valves the twinkies have in the heads. i tried the same trick on the twinkie but no difference, then used the s&s Reed valve and noticed a gain, seemed to be a bit more responcive. |
