I'm running an 07 Softail with K&N highflow a/c, Sonic slipons, PCIII, dynotuned by Brian at Eastern Big Twin.

Ran like a dream for about the first 12months.

then one day I pulled up at traffic lights after coming off a steady freeway run and the idle dropped off til it was going to die. I kept it running and it settled down again.

This same thing then happed a few more of times more over next 12 months. So far it has not done it consistently for a great lenght of time, usually comes good.

I've just done 5000km over the Xmas break. In Qld I filled with Shell and the bike ran badly. When nearly empty it began idling high (like 2000rpm) and back firing badly.

I refuelled with BP 98 octane, checked the crank angle sensor for crap (it was clean) and off we went. Running good again.

But I am still getting occasional terrible backfire and no idle... like it will die. Bike can be running OK. Pull up for a hour or so. Bike runs like crap when you leave. Next day bike is fine all day.

This happened at the A&B bike show last weekend and I was running BP 98 octane.

Any thoughts on where the problem may lie?

Dave

Bad tank of fuel with a lot of crap in it and clogged the filters... Maybe. Could be a mirriod of things. But as a guess fuel/water in the tank...

Same thing happened witha friend, here's his post.

"I found out what was wrong with my friends bike last night.

What lead me too it was this. When were ringing the wires out there were a couple that just were not right. (Spark and Injectors). The manual I was using was for a 2003 RoadKing. I thought since I had spark and gas on one cylinder, the wires had to be right, and the wiring must be different for the Dyna.

This past weekened I downloaded the Dyna Service manual (Very nice). I pulled up the wiring diagram. As far as wires going to the ECM it was almost identical as the 2003 RK. So I know something was wrong.
(I also downloaded the manual for my 2004 RoadKing, 5 bucks)

LIGHT BULB This bike must have a Power Commander of sometype. I called my buddy(his girl friends bike). She said no. I went over there last night, we pulled the battery, batter box, Fuse, ECM assembly all out. Guess what was hidden under the ECM and was bad. Power Commander DynoJet.

Plug the cable directly into the ECM and the bike runs great."

No mate, the Thundermax is "complex" and the TTS is straightforward if you've any windows based laptop experience.

Also less expensive and will utilise your ( re-connected ) stock O2 sensors.

I have now had several bikes remove the PC3 and run way better.Even after 3 hours on the dealer dyno !!

Ho- yes i too had "help" from a professional once in Amsterdam ( well before I was married y'see)....HAHAHA

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check the stop screw 1st thing.
Have had a suggestion to clean the throttle body. Have just had a look, its quite greasy and dirty (though not excessivley).
Next question: has anyone ever cleaned the body without taking the whole thing off?

Update: (for anyone interested in the outcome...) Checked idle stop screw - OK. Cleaned the butterfly and venturi with carb cleaner. I think it has improved idle. Almost zero off-throttle noise or popping. This weekend 27Feb bike died. Rode to pub ( Satans Slaves poker run) parked, bike running great. Went to leave, dead as a maggot. No spark.Have disconnected the PCIII and it immediately fired up. So to all you guys tipping the PCIII is playing up... you get the choccies.
I have replaced the stock airfilter and will ride like that until I can get a TTS in the very near future.

MandM cycles quoted me the best price so far for the TTS.

"It'll take you 10 minutes to cut through the cuffs and about 3 to get through your leg."
