its a 96 sportster sport,1200cc . im looking at keeping simple as... my bike is daily ride and not pretty so not worried how it looks really, also go for tours on a lot of weekends with the wife. possibly put a bag over turbo to stop burnies. thanks for reply

hi Tussuck, getting closer to build time, have a good mate who has been into turbos for years, but mostly with 4cyl cars and deisels. so he will help me a bit if i call, my base is a 96 sporty sport, so have twin disc front and better suspension then std sporty, i have had it for a few years and have faithfuly been giving it a hiding over that time. any way she now burns a bit of oil and so new rings and hopefully just a hone will fresh the top, but will do whatever she needs which may chew the $ and mean no turbo yet. i reckon the valves need a go also as it sounds a bit choofy through the pipes which are open 2 1/4" drag pipes welded onto std size about an inch out of the head
Im aiming for draw through and use the SE carb thats on it at the moment, it also has SE ignition module, thats the back ground as far as i know it, i didnt build this bike an so dont really know whats been done, i suspect the cams are not std as its a tad jercky around town
under 2000 revs, yeah in fact its on the clutch in or below these revs, but..... i have to say this is my first Harley, so is that normal?
so this is the aim.... draw through, turbo up high enough so oil will drain back into tank, angle of turbo not an issue as will use any carb i have to! if its high an next tank will simply use turbo blanket, bottom line is.....i really dont give a FK what the thing looks like, what is important is that it goes hard and will so for time evermore. unfortunatly this will offend some purist and i dont mean to do that, if i could afford to spend big $ on it i would and it would look great, so hopefully i have explained everything in a way that is ok. any ADVISE would be great, im in my 50's and (hopefully ) past b/shit stage, i just want the ride the thing.

hi , this is my ride , is injected so lot simpler than carby to tune and and no lag , i havent done carby bike yet but would be interesting , draw thru would be hard to pick size of turbo and and inlet or exhaust pipes  to unit unit so it spools up early for torque , to small for street better than to big , just a thought ,my own bike has 11.6 comp static ,  limited to 10 pounds boost on 98 pump fuel , cubic inch is 106 twin cam  makes 180+ at 6100 and 200+ at 6800 rpm , was throwen together with bit of thought and few beers as i do and goes well , all best with your build ,  ,cheers ,

Hey matey,  I would steer clear of a draw through system; even though they are simpler than a blow-through they went out of fashion in the 70's.  The main problem with them is they can be real bastards to start and the Turbo unit needs special seals so that it can withstand the fuel mix going through it.  A t least you do not have to worry too much about intercoolers and fuel pumps + rising rate regulators to match pressure to boost with a draw-through, although it still pays to have a small low pressure pump (say 2psi) to help keep the float bowl full under full boost.

 Any carb will do for a draw-through as well, although I would research it more as some carbs are better than others.  The issues I have with the stock Harley CV are that it continuely destroys the rubber membrane on the slider (I think its because boost comes on so fast that it really slams the unit upwards and stresses the rubber too much), I go through about 1 every 2 months and while I can still limp home when it goes, its not ideal. Dynoharley has the right idea in using an EFI bike as that solves a chitload of problems, although it does need a differnet set of skills to tune the bugger.

Can you tweak or program up the Ignition advance curve at all?  I have mine setup to add heaps of retard at 3000rpm which is when full boost is on to help keep the engine together.  Some ignition modules support two curves with them being automatically switchable (my one does, but I have not played with it yet – perhaps next summer)

 Hey…on the oil side of things I have some pictures of where to tap into the cases for the oil feed and return lines that I can post up if I can find them – they are not mine and I cannot remember where I got them from, but they are definitely Sporty centric.

 I’m waiting for winter to settle in and will then pull the heads as I recon they need an inspection at the very least and perhaps a light valve reseat; worst case will be new bushes for the rocker arms as I’m getting a fair bit of top end noise this year.

 You really really need to pull the cam cover at some point and ID what cams you have.  Having said that I know absolutely zip about Sporty Cams – now if it was a big twin then I could help.  I’m running an Andrews EV31 which is designed specifically for blower engines and can tell the difference between this one and the old Andrews EV35 that I started out with (the EV35 was bloody peaky, basically bugger all until 3000rpm and then the bike would take off like a two-stroke on steroids!)  At least the EV31 smooths things out across a wider rpm range.

For starts i would keep your compression stock.  Mine is standard at 8.5:1 static, although my calculator tells me I hit around 14.5:1  when under full boost which is 10lbs.  I am impressed that Dynoharley can run 11.5 static without an intercooler - bloody well done mate.  Upping the compression is something I have not thought of yet and may be worth a crack as i have not had any pinging issues to date - and i do have a set of spare Evo heads in the shed awaiting tweaking if I every get enough free time. 

My turbo is off the bike as we speak and should be landing in the USA this week to get serviced!  God I cannot wait to get it back!  I also have another Aerocharger turbo (that has been serviced) that I’m going to put up for sale as the air outlet port is at the wrong angle for my setup (you cannot ‘clock’ these units) – yes I could modify my mounting brackets and plumbing setup but it starts getting messy so I figure its easier in the long run to fix the old one instead.  Lesson to self – NEVER run the turbo at 20lbs even though its frigging insane on the power front as the unit is just not designed for it.

hi tussuck , on injected bike like mine ,  , i havent a  need a intercooler , the air take takes  in what temp is on day ,   ,  , turboes are very touchy on air temp and humidity as we know , my build on my motor has to much dynamic cyclinder presure by book ,and cam 105 lsa which should be maybe 112 ,  , , but it does work , the eng makes good power for 106 cub , so long as i dont go over 10 pound boost with 98 pump fuel , this bike has done 2000 + ks with this on it ,on it  but has done 300 + max horse power runs on my dynos , before that with build before has done another 2000 runs with out turbo and  different cams heads etc , but botton end and barrels pistons the same ,  crank s/s , cant fault it , twin cam engines very tough , is  b motor , it has been very kind to me , i am lucky i have the machines to monitor tunes properly and play ,the main thing is if you guys get eng running air fuel the most important and timeing , go to dyno to check these readings properly at all revs and loads , and eng will last out side of breakage from extra load ,  tune and air fuel ,and timeing most important , tune cheap  , damage dear , catch ya

I was starting to think about the simple ole SU as will flow what ever amount of fuel is sucked through it, will have to take ign module off and check it out and see what it is actualy as about.... and yeah the seventies were great man!!!! i think, lol

yeah dyno, i agree with the smaller may well be better..( did i actualy say that?). have you wrapped the back feed in exhaurst and also part of the outlet exhaurst ? were they both giving out to much heat?

when rideing you dont feel any more heat than what normaly comes of engine , warm traffic shows little more heat , the wrapping tidys up were tubes welded and stop any buning if happen to touch pipes , this was thrown together in 2 days , rode alittle and now sits ,

On my install i have the exhaust input running in front of the front cylinder and the exhaust out of the turbo directly under it. So to protect the fuel pump, regulator (which are mounted in the base of the lower fairing) and to stop heat soaking back into the engine I have wrapped heat tape around the pipes that run across the front of the bike. It works bloody well too as you can basically touch the tape straight after a hard run and not burn yourself. I sprayed the tape with VHT paint after it was in position as it helps the hold its shape.

hi rascal i am at cobden , the wraps around exhaust are rough job , but worked at times  , i have been to fish holes rally 5 times good great do for couple times had bike at port land  drags , great place , are you going to penola sand drags , cheers
