for what its worth I use Redline can be exy depending where you buy but its a bloody good oil and Cycle shack turbo tapered slipons fitted to stock headers make great horsepower and tune due to stock length, might not be the look but I took this advice onboard from an engine builder whith dyno charts etc and the advice was good. I know Tussock has suggested EV3 and EV27 and they are both good cams with the 27 being my preference however I went with the EV46 on my last build and they get up and go so worth a look when you get to cams

Talking cams, I am after suggestions for my bikes. The electraglide is going to be 2 up all the time and generally a long trip bike and carrying a bit of gear/luggage, so looking at keeping up with the twinkies for long periods. The Softail is more of a short trip bike, poker runs/bike shows, bit of a tarty/slutty little show off kind of thing. Would you go the same cam for both bikes or different. Can anyone recommend a good spot/site to read up on them?

On the subject of Carbs! Oddley enough the CV Kehien unti that came stock on Harleys is a damn good unit. I read a review of it in a faceoff with the S&S and Mikuni and it held its own really well - to thje degree that one would be hard pressed to notice the difference on a 80" engine (thats the HP/Dyno ttype test - but i recon that seat of the pants real world riding may be show differences)

If i can find the artical i'll post it up.

I run Redline in the tranny now - its my first season with it and so far i like it. Things seem smoother than the old harley gear oil - but time will tell - i am keen to see how it holds up for a day of touring around Victoria!

tonight i rode a mates 80cube up on the river in NSW, its bloody hot up here at present, i rode it open road 30kms. hes running the ultima r2 carb and it seems to have a bit more go than mine, he also has a moon type filter and short shot pipes on her so it may breath a little better than mine.
im changing my oil on the weekend, i rode her last friday night it was hot and sticky and she felt really hot with a little tappet rattle on take off.

Yes...I have seen those Ultima Carbs around... I read somewhere they are a direct knock-off of the S&S Super E and if thats true then they should be a good unit!

Generally speaking a new Carb and Pipes is a good quick way to nudge the perf up a little. Then look at Cam and Ignition and finally a turbo! (just kidding on the turbo - although I'm biased and they do turn a stock engine into a 110HP fire breather)

When my old evo heritage clocked over 100,000 klms, I got the heads ported, high comp pistons, mikuni carb, S/E ignition and with the 6 speed box, she punts along real nice, plus she is still reliable. When I do a big run, I want to get home as well. As some of the boys have said, keep your changes simple and make sure each change you do works with the other changes to get optimum results. I've seen quite a few bikes that are over cammed or over carbied with the wrong pipes and they don't run as well as they should.

Cam tips 101: When swapping out your cam for a new one take both cams to a workshop and have them swap the cam gear off the old Cam onto the new Cam (Harley Heaven will do this for $50 - yes i know its pricey but its cheaper than buy a hydrolic press)

What this does is avoid any issues with the new Cam Gear not matching up with the Oil Gear etc in your timing case. Sometimes you can get away with just dropping in the new cam, but theres a high risk that you will end up with gear whine.
