South West highway named state's worst road

A 73 kilometre stretch of the South West Highway has been named Western Australia's most dangerous road.

The RAC has compiled a list of the ten worst sections of roads in the state and almost every one is in a regional area.

The section of highway between Bridgetown and Shannon topped the list with part of the Brookton Highway in Perth's hills the second worst.

The RAC's David Moir says the roads have many faults including faded markings, poor visibility, or unsealed road shoulders.

"A very high number of people are killed and injured on our country highways and while driver behaviour is part of it, so is the state of the roads," he said.

"That's why we're calling on the government in the next year's budget to announce a five year program that's going to bring these two star roads up to an acceptable four or five star standard."

    The RAC's list is:

    1. South West Highway between Yornup (near Bridgetown) and Shannon.

    2. Brookton Highway between Roleystone and Karragullen.

    3. Bussell Highway between Cowaramup and Margaret River.

    4. Vasse Highway at Yeagarup.

    5. Brockman Highway between Darradup and Jalbarragup.

    6. South West Highway between Hamel and Cookernup.

    7. South West Highway at Byford.

    8. Muirs Highway west of Strachan.

    9. South Coast HIghway between Peaceful Bay and Parryville.

    10. Great Northern Highway between Bindoon and Wannamal.
