Flat battery with alarm on.

    Gents,

I picked up a new 06 Sporty custom a few years back.

Insurance is covered with alarm/immobiliser activated, stored in locked garage.

When I leave the bike sitting for longer than about 5 weeks I end up with a dead flat battery. Yeah, I know, I should ride it more often........ but in Tassie during winter it's not always the best weather.

It's been back to the dealer 3 times to have the electrics checked and battery replaced (under warranty) but no problems found. They suggested buying a trickle charger. My argument was that the bike, fitted with a factory alarm/immobiliser, should sit for longer than 5 weeks without a flat battery. Or, HD should be supply a charger with the bike.

It's no longer a problem 'cos the missus got sick of me bitchin' about the battery and bought me a charger.

Has anyone else had this problem? Got any thoughts or suggestions?

    Smokey.

What kind of charger did you buy? You should have bought something like a battery fighter, or a battery tender, which only supply enough current to keep the battery topped up and you can leave them connected constantly (or take them off as simply as pulling a plug when you want to ride) without damaging the battery by trying to flood in juice that isn't needed and causing problems...

    Thanks Guys.

Bonkerz, the missus got something similar, forget the breed, it has charge & monitor modes & won't cook the battery. The dealer even sent her to the Jap shop opposition cos the same charger was $30 cheaper there.

Interesting that some dealers supply  tricklers. That was my point I s'pose. It would have been easier to give me a charger and piss me off out the door rather than replace 3 batteries & spend 10 hours looking for problems. On the other hand, at least I know everythings been checked and I can't complain about the service.

    Thanks HogBag.

I might check my manual too.

The only time I knew the battery was flat was when the alarm light stopped flashing.

hi guys , i too had to buy a battery tender for my 2013 1200XLC , i think on the long run its more cheaper rather changing battery every year. In my case i had started the bike the day before but didn't take it for a ride , and rest morning preparing for work , battery was flat.

anyways followed the below video to disconnected main fuse , all working good now :)

Old enough that I looked at my own name and wondered who the fuck the impersonator was and I was about the recommend a much better charger :)  I know my memory is shit so that really hit home.

My Road King is too old for those problems even though I keep trickle chargers on all my bikes anyway. However I have two Hondas one of which has security system and both of them will totally flatten a battery in six weeks with no input.

My 2016 Dyna won't have enough juice in the battery after 6 weeks to start the bike, where as the Honda can be left for at least 6 months.
I'm not sure if the batteries are a bit dodgy from new, or maybe if the bike is moved without starting activating the alarm and sensors
