    Hi Guys,

I have a 2010 Fatboy Lo with minor mods like pipes and scremin eagle breather.

Bike has only 1000kms still new.

Rode it last Sunday for about 20kms and parked it at home.

I ussually put it on the charger but forgot to do it this time.

Tried to kick it over last night and it wouldnt start.

Battery is full, just could not hear it crank only clicking.

Took the bike on the road to try and clutch it but no luck.

With the bike off i put it in gear and hold the clutch in the bike does not move.

When i tried clutching it i the back wheel locked up.

Im really confused and dont know if its a common problem or not.

A while back when my battery wasnt charged i managed to clutch it, i dont know why this has happened.

    Please Help!!!

I would think it's still under warranty so get onto the dealer....

    Hi Sparra,
I will call the dealer tomorrow but I'm worried that they will void warranty as I removed the gearbox cover primary cover and timing cover to get them powder coated. I did everything according to the manual. The bike has been normal since those changes.
    I'm so shitty mate.
    It's only done 1000 Kms.

It feels as the engine has seized or something.

    Thanks for that hmmm,
I'll give that a try first thing tomorrow morning.
It's really weird that this has happened as it hasn't given me any problems whilst riding.
I noticed one thing. I have Vance and Hines short shots and my rear axle cover is chrome. I found some discolouring on the cover the way the exhaust is gets. I don't know If it's always been there or I just noticed it because I'm looking into to it to much.

    I appreciate all the info.
    Thanks

    First thing. Dont Panic!
start from the basics. Check the battery leads are tight. Then check the cables and earths around the starter. (U may have pulled something.
Now check that ur batter is Fully Charged. injected bikes need full charge. 12 . Something or more. (Full is 13-5v)-
If ur voltage under load is too low, u may not even power up the relays or computer. .
give this a tey before u loose hope.
    Good luck

If the pipes and filter were fitted by the dealer all will ne cool. Modern efi engines can adjust them selves and compensate for some changes without remappinf. The colour cjange may just be carbon or heat marks. Richer running usually means cooler running. My carby dyna refused to turn over with 12v rhe starter just clixks over and over. I really cant rhink why the powder coat would cause any probs. Let tha nattery charge fully and get it load tested if that doesnt do it.. pyll ur plugs and see if the engine turns over now..
just as a thought, how h
much oil did you put in it!

It's fuct, I'll give ya 5 grand for it :)

wouldn't matter if the donk was seized, should still b able to move the bike in neutral or with clutch in.
Do these latest models have the clutch engagement switch on 'em. Ya know, bike won't start unless clutch lever is pulled in.

Maybe the starter motor has sieged in the engaged position?

Another thing is batteries sometimes need replacement after two years.

Im no expert but I would assess the following.

    Check Battery with a multimeter.

    Check all fuses.

Check Battery Terminal Leads for tightness and good ground.

Check Starter Motor wire for tightness.

I don't recommend clutching the bike as I have seen a few snapped drive belts from this process.

Also another little tip on a flat battery, after ya turn the ignition on is switch ya bike into run mode, listen if the relay sound is normal or real dull.

If all these work out take it to your Stealer.

    Hi to all,
Spoke to the service guys at the dealer ship as I couldn't get the bike to them.
They said it has to be the battery and Harley's cannot be clutch started.
The thing that worried me the most is that I have clutch started it once before.
Anyway went and got myself a new battery and it worked.
It's good to see that everyone was spot on with the outcome.
    Thanks to everyone.
I still think the battery life was nowhere near to what it should be.
    It's all good.
    Cheers

    good stuff mate.
batteries can fall on their arse at any time. not sure having it always on the charger is a good thing.

bit late now you got a new one but the Lithium Ion Batteries arn't bad, bloody expensive though

Good to hear you got your bike sorted.

I wouldn't recommend using the trickle charger all the time. It is only intended for use if you don't ride your bike for extended periods of time like 5 or 6 months or over winter etc. A good battery should easily still start the bike after 3 months between rides.

When they get a bit older, say 4 or 5 years, thats when you should consider  maybe purchasing a second battery and keeping it in the garage dry, then its handy when you need it most.

Batterys are funny things sometimes, as other members in the know will attest. IvĂ© seen brand new batteries that won't work properly and hold stuff all charge, and others that work fine one minute, and appear to be flat the next. Sometimes as Choppa said, they drop a cell (or break a contact inside between the plates), resulting in getting voltage out of it, from charged particles inside the fluid, but having no amps (cranking ability for the starter motor), cause the plates are not connected.  Like i said, your battery may appear ok cause you see the idiot lights on, but it all dies when you press the starter button.

Hope this helps in some way for you to understand what batteries can do sometimes.

Newer bikes, the battery won't stay charged as long as they have alarms armed, lights flashing etc which all uses power....Now my old Evo is a different story...

    "harleys can't be clutch started"???

    Since when?
I've clutch started mine a few times, no problem.
