**## Updated with bike weight and new Breakout model.**

G"day forumites, Here is a quick guide I made up for the various model codes, ground clearance height, and left and right lean angles for 2012 and 2013 standard unmodified bikes. Weight is in running order in kgs.  Might help to explain why some can, and can't go around corners fast. Hope you enjoy. Cheers Hutch.

You should really have another column to factor it that the only bike that doesn't handle like wet shit on the bottom of your shoe is the Dynas.

So the Softail standard should be the best handling bike out there if your theory holds !!

oneball, that's sort of what I was hinting at !!

Now my FXDX, that has around 35 deg' lean angle and 150mm clearance, and I can still scrape things !
But it does handle very well !

Odd that the old road king scores well fir both clearance and angle! That's deceptive!

I'll stick with the good old FXR...

Gidday FLHuTCHu ... am i right in thinking those figures are in Millimetres and does a Softail realy have that much more ground clearence and lean angle over a Dyna ... very deceptive arnt they ... it`s allways interesting to see someone put some time into their post .

Thats right Tim and thanks for the recognition. MM it is, (i added it to the line just now). I should point out that these figures are unloaded with no rider. So each bike will have a reduced clearance and lean angle based upon the weight of the rider. But to compare apples with apples, say a 80 kg rider should theoretically be able to corner harder and faster on a Softy standard compared to the same rider on a Fatbob for example, BUT the suspension is better on a fatbob and can be made stiffer, where as the softy is more compliant and has a softer setting. So the FXDF would probably have the advantage.
My personal ride, FLHTCU has the most clearance, and is the heaviest bike out of the bunch. I can pump up the shocks and make it stiffer which is good two up when full of gear but too hard when empty.
I can regularly round up other bikes fully loaded and stay on the arse of other standard bikes around bends as it has a great lean angle too.
I love staying on the tail of the odd mate who thinks the granny glides are slow around bends, me two up and loaded pushing around 670kg all up, Them single on a rocker c for example weighing in at 430kg all up, and i always have to brake into and coast around corners as not to hit them and they just cant lose me. It's good fun.
( Disclaimer time! I'm not a speed demon, I just like to give it a bit when the situation allows and is right. i'm not picking on Rocker fans, it is just one example. and Yes people i know some riders are better than others. Plenty could out ride me on all sorts of bikes, But this is just my example of what i know as i have had a Heritage, Fatty and a Muscle to boot.)
Point is in this particular example that the tourers don't have to be slow around bends, they have the clearance and the good angles and the adjustable shocks and are just more comfortable at cruising speeds IMOP.

By the way i have scraped the on the left three times now but never on the right. One day!............

Well it's always good to have good info,

but the way things are these days ( speed camera's all over the place & cops ) its not hard to keep up on anything. i'm forced to ride at part throtle all the time.

the weight is important too, the new Harleys get bigger motors but if weight goes up, that effects handling and performance. i had a 98 cubic inch kick start only shovel & put it on the scales at the track 545 pound wet  bloody thing still goes but my mate put an electric start on it 6 speed box & rides sydney to sunshine coast & back regular ( once or twice a year ) plus it ran 11.7 114mph quarter mile still runs 11.9 with my mate on it  no imission control on that model eather. i did 1 million k on it from new, he is still trying to wear it out ( but just freashed the motor up )

my old 01 dyna lost some weight, weighed in at the track at 598pound ( carb model )

how do you boys wear Harleys out so fast?

Lean angles were the big shock when I got my Deluxe (first Harley). Coming from Jap bikes the first few corners scared the shit out of me. I have had to modify how I ride so I don't scrape all over the place. Not a bad thing since it slows you down a fair bit, plus the thought of coming into a corner too fast and dropping my baby is unthinkable.

I read that the new breakout has apparently got a revised suspension mount or something , which they say is a handling improvement and may be used on all future softies , Oh yeah great thread , well done Mr TChU !

    My favorite Harley

Solid mount Sportie XL1200S 97 to 03 I think -  36 and 40 degree lean angles, Ajustable Suspension for rebound damping front and rear plus Buell Lightning twin plug Heads.   Twin Disc front end with later models getting 4 piston calipers.

Its a blast in the twisties with the skirt in the breeze
