Vance and Hines Super Radius Exhaust

Ok, I looked everywhere for a decent review on the Super Radius from Vance and Hines and didn't find much worth the read, so here's my 2 cents worth.

First I'll tell you I had the V&H Big Radius with std baffles. Sound tested at a registered centre at 110db.I had these baffles modified and got them down to 105db. Any more and I would have chocked the bike!

After numerous encounters with the law,(QLD) for High Bars, Mirrors too small, Indicators too small, andf finally "I'll put you off the road it I see those exhausts on next week". I ripped the BR off and put modified stock pipes on. Sounded and looked like shit!!

I spotted the SR and after talking to the exhaust guys, they said 2.5" should be enough to baffle down to an acceptable level for my blue friends.

I looked everywhere for reviews and got 3/5s of FA, took a gamble and bought them anyway. ($1250.00).

First off, packaging was not good as the header pipe heat shields were wrapped in a single foam cover but left to float around the box, and one foam cover wore through and has left a small mark on the cover. You have to look hard to see it but it's there. The new advertising says comes with 2 rear foot peg risers (1 for each side), but mine must have been old stock and only had one. I will get onto V&H to fix this! Other than this all was in the box and finish is ok all round. Heat shields are show chrome but the muffler body the protrudes past this is not. No big deal, but worth the mention. The pipes fit was perfect and went on a dream as did the heat shields. Came with the bungs and adapters for 12mm sensors.

The look is personal choice, but I think they look hot, better than photos I've seen and better than the BRs. Pipes do sit a bit far off the frame, just another small detail. Now for the sound. I left the baffles in, (were installed already) as I don't want to attract any more attention than I have too. The sound is BIG, not raspy like the BR. It's much deeper. Best way to describe it is not too load, but fills the room and still says "I got balls". The baffles look like V&H standard straight baffles, modified to fit the 2.5" diameter pipes, probably only 6" long wrapped in wool. (perforated tube). Remembering the heavilly modified baffles in the BR were 105db, these weigh in at 100db out the box. They seem to sound louder, but that's the BIG part I was talking about. I can stand beside the bike and talk without yelling, yet ride along and still hear the note I'm leaving behind. The pipes have a restrictor 1/2 way down the muffler body, just before the baffles finish. This would also contribute to the volume drop and add a little back pressure. Not sure what the power chamber is, could be the 2.5" body space after the headers and before the restictor plate. By the way the "sound insert" as advertised can only be the baffle....I'm guessing!  I've posted some pics for those interested.  Would I buy these again. They are probably the most expensive pipes around..or close to it. But for the possibility to have baffles made to bring these down to a compliant level (and be certified in QLD) was the biggest reason to buy them. I have nothing bad to say about these, so if you want this look, and not be nasty loud out of the box (and still sound great) with the added posibility of getting a compliant sticker, then these are the go. Otherwise I can't say I felt any increase in power over the BRs, and if sound level isn't an issue you might not want to spend the money.

If you want noisy pipes that you can modify....short shots, long shots by Vance & Hines which have choice of quiet or noisy baffles. Another option is Bassini exhaust. If you're in Victoria I know a couple of guys that do Dyno tuning to suit these exhausts. I have a friend in Hallam whose work is excellent. RJ

Your right. I could get the BR down to compliant level, but the bike was very choked up. These SR with the extra diameter should be ok. I'll keep you updated as I go. But for the moment these are pretty good straight out the box.

It's an old thread that's been dug up Sparra but you're not alone.
