    Howdy all,

I guess this question is directed towards all Dyna owners out there who have tried forward controls kit installation.
Did you remove the primary cover when installing the new shifter ? If not, how did you cover the existing shifter rod and the attached connector?

    Cheers

    Vladt.
I used the Kuryakyn forwards so, left the shifter shaft in place, covered it with the supplied "Beauty cover".
Will do something different to it whenever the nead arrises to remove the iner primary.

Well I left the shaft in place but I am not sure what to do with the linkage that's attached to the shaft behind the primary cover? I can't remove the linkage without removing the primary cover. How do I stop it from vibrating and moving about?

Put something over the splines that you can tighten up. With my setup thats what the beauty cover does. Shaft stays in place and doesn't rattle around.

I wish I could see a pic of people cabletying this out of the way!
The cover that came with HD kit only designed to cover a hole left after the shaft is removed!

Thanks heaps stix68 for the pix. Sounds easy enough, however I did read that if not secured properly, the old linkage can get in a way.
Hence I have decided to completely remove the old linkage. This necessiates removal of the primary cover. HD instructions refers to the Service Manual which I currently do not have. Any chance anyone here can scan in few pages refering to removal/reinstallation of the primary housing?

    Cheers

Heres a picky of the cover. On the linkage arm i bolted a locating cradle, sort of an "L" shape. The linkage arm is rotated rearwards and the locating cradle" pulled up against the inner primary cover. When you put the beauty cover on the splined end, all ya do is put some tension on the gear shaft so it holds tight. I used a lump of wood behind the shaft to gently put some pressure on it. Beauty cover on, pushed tightly upto the rubber grommet on the gear shaft, held on with a grub screw.

    Hi Pizzlin,

Have you ever considered publishing a book titled "Harley Forward Control Kit Install for Dummies"?
If not , than you definitely should as your instructions are absolutely awesome!

Thanks so much for taking the time. I'll get the job done this weekend providing I can get the bracket made up.
There are few local steel shops in the area which shouldn't have a problem making one up in 5min!

I'll post the pics once done.
    Cheers

I'll let you know by Sunday night. Even though the idea of keeping mid's is lucrative at the moment, I don't believe I'd be changing over from forwards to mids in the near future. Hence I am inclined to remove the shaft all together for a "cleaner" look, especially since I just got an original service manual
