Bike sales in Australia have been down 13.5% in the first quarter compared to same period in 2016. Roadbike sales are down 15.5%. Up was Victory 61%! and Indian 12.9%.
Best individual seller in roadbikes was HD Breakout selling at 16%more units than previous year.

Victory and Indian sorta of makes sense, but don't really know why you would.
For other road bikes sales, there are a bunch of cracking new models coming online from Triumph, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Harley in 2017. Maybe BMW too. Some new bike buyers have waited.

Interesting the Breakout still such a top seller noting it doesn't have the M8 yet ... presumably will later this year or next.

Well guess its no surprise.......bike sales are down again in 2018.  Harley are down 21.2% and if it was not for breakout, 794 bikes and Street 500, 944 bikes the drop would have been much harder. And this comes hot on the heals of Harleys big hope Livewire release with everyone including the yanks that at $42k its overpriced. The very similar powered ZERO motorcycle sold in Aust for $20k and they have just pulled the pin due to being unable to sell enough bikes.

Collectively how many electric vehicles would have been sold in Australia? A few thousand?
Regarding overall bike sales, I believe the perfect storm has appeared that is impacting large bike sales.

Lots of low km secondhand bikes on the market, this not only takes sales of new bikes but stops people upgrading due to low resales and poor trade in values.
The classic bike scene is pretty hot, this again takes sales from new bikes..historic rego has driven some of this especially second, third bike purchases.
The classic cars scene, easy sell to the missus as the “family” can take part.
Shit dealer experience. HD, BMW and Indian are OK but the other brands are mostly dismal.

I would have put the HD Dealers in the dismal basket but there are a few good ones. The local Triumph dealer sold 6 new bikes in December and they were top QLD dealer.....WOW!

Happy to add the Bunnings of the bike shops to the dud list and they do have HD dealerships aparently made in Heaven.
Also a vic HD dealer told me last week they would be making a loss for 2018..first time ever in 8 years of trading. Nothing moving and this is a good dealership.

That Triumph volume is definitely a Wow...how long can they and more so the other dealers keep that up.
The vic country Triumph dealer in Bendigo went tits up a few years back as well..a mate and I actually enquired about the business as it was for sale..Triumph, KTM and Suzuki..if I remember correctly about $500K was required to pay for stock, lease and name and as it was losing $100K a year no finance mob would touch it.

I recon thats part of the sales problem, multi bike brand shops are not too bad, but we have a local Honda, Suzuki and KTM dealer who sells other crap like chain saws and mowers..not the most inspired place to hand over $20K + on a new toy.
I do understand the cost of keeping the doors open does mean that alot of business need to diversify.

Single franchise dealerships are very tough to make a quid

I took a mate to Canberra yesterday to pick up his new street bob, $21,400 ride away.
A helluva lot cheaper than any shop in Sydney.

I presume they are also offering free airport pickup and if needed, a free night at Canberra South Motor Park. A map for a self-guided tour of Fyshwick could be handy for some too.

There really is a simple answer to Harleys sales , Drop the prices and the bikes will sell , Its not really rocket science , the  allur of the harley is lost on a lot of the young ones , they see harley riders as scruffy old growlies , and they can't afford a harley , a lot of older guys who can afford harleys , think  , lot of money for a toy ,   and the ones who don't think that , probably already own a harley , but keep it longer  because of the cost of replacing it . put simply Harley probably are the bike of choice  for most , but are just too expensive ,
