This thread is for those who are undecided!
I've gone from a Fatboy to a 48 (I can hear the gasps now) and I'm totally happy.

I want you to know that the 'lesser' harley isnt what you think.

With new pipes and a tuner, this 48 is quicker than the fatboy with comparable "go fast" bits.  I find that I ride it HEAPS more because im not so precious about the weather, an about where I'm parking it.

It weighs less, it's more fun to ride...

Only my opinion of course, but I'm plenty proud of being on a Sporster, and I've not looked back.

PS: I live in Sydney - That might be the difference for most.  I'd ride the Fatboy happily down the highway all day, but suburbia says that the 48 rules ;)

I'm the same....LOVE my 883; ride her every day to and from work summer and winter.  Nothing better for acceleration and being nimble in traffic.  I have cheated and still have the old FXR though...

Yep, love my 883. Have had it since new, 7 years now. Dealer keeps trying to convince me to "upgrade" to a dyna or soft tail, but the nimbleness of the sporty wins me back every time. Would like another Harley of course, but if I do get one I will be keeping the sporty for sure. TC

Other way round here, went from a 48 to Low Rider S. Have not thought about my sporty since hitting the starter on that big 110ci donk :)

My 48 did look trick though, the LRS sort of just blends in.

Great thread this one.  I love my Sporty, best bike I've ever had.  In fact my main interest in HD revolves around Sporty's.  I had a Street Bob years ago, was a good bike, but the Sporty is much more fun to ride.

I would love to have a sporty sitting in the garage for shorter trips, the tourer is great on long rides but not so much around town.
When I find the right one...

    Hi All
I have had many bikes in my 8 or so years of riding , pretty much all super sport bikes, Man they are awesome and fun. However , I sold my last sports bike 3 years ago, hand brought a sportster forty eight.

Main reason I wanted a bike that was timeless that I can keep for a very very long time ( and this bike i probably will never sell) the bike is so fun to ride and has useable power. I find so many people staring at me when im riding to give the thumbs up its quite funny .

I never understood why people say , upgrade to a bigger bike, and why sporties get a bad wrap ( girls bike etc ) i think its more ego and insecurities from new rider who are just posers and want to look like hard cnts.

I think they are the best value for money ( for a harley ) considering buying a newer bigger bike is like 30 K plus

Love the 1200 Custom. It's light and nimble to ride between GC and Brissy peak hour traffic and back. I sometimes wish it had a 6th gear for those long clear roads. Modding it up bit more to accommodate luggage.

Think of it as a bigger sporty with a huge engine :)

Just as nimble, just as maneuverable in traffic (I am a bigger boy though)

turn the throttle and you cant compare them, although on paper my sporty made 87hp with cams and a whole bunch of shit done to it, the LRS only makes 90rwhp but the torque figures are 50% greater.

    sporties rule! lol, nah they are good, like the custom coz it has a reasonable fuel range, and once you get rid of the crap rear shockers, it`ll cruise well enough for me (((-;

Krash it's a solid mount 2001, that trip makes me want to do more big ride but probably not on a sporty. I will never sell the sporty but will buy another bike for touring.

    well done Skirtster!!
Dave Barr road a ridgid mount skirtster across Siberia, that was after riding a Shovelhead around the world including Cape York and was solo. no film crew, he had no legs so makes it doubly remarkable.

I was happy with the 3,000k ride i did picking up my 03 1200 as had large load tied on the back seat plus a heavy back pack on my back.
i plan to set up forks and have Terry Hays built rear shocks . then see what I can get it to do quarter mile in, would be good to get a few other sporty's to the track too scare the big inch big twins
    cheers

There was a scientific survey done only last year and it was discovered that sporty riders were prone to being a bit limp wristed.
I don't know if its true or not but.

I carried 5litres of petrol, only needed once. Between Port Headlands and Roebuck there is 300km between roadhouses, I sat on 100k's the whole way and ran out 280k's. On average I was getting between 200 to240k's per tank.
