A friend of mine with a mid 2000's superglide done the conversion, he left the shift arm from the mids in the case and just ran a new linkage from the foreward controls. The kit came with a cap to cover the spline on the shaft.
Not the prettiest but it does the job, ideally for the neatest finish a complete kit with primary covers is the way to go.
    Option 1 cheaper/easier
Option 2 will cost more and be more effort but will have a more complete finish

I left mine and machined up a stainless cover for the spline. I'll remove it one day if I ever have the inner primary off but how it is doesn't bother me. I also made a bracket that bolts down off of an existing bolt (hidden down between motor and primary)that stops the obsolete linkage from moving about. I'd take a picture for you but I'm working away interstate

No because it's not used at all once you fit the forwards but you don't want it flopping around either.
A lot of people reach up the inside of the primary with a hacksaw blade and cut through the shaft then the linkage will be free to fall out and pull the shaft out through the outer primary.
Then the holes will need to be sealed... I preferred not to go that way....
Nearly 10 years on and I still have the mid shaft there, retained so it doesn't move and it's not visible unless you look down between the primary and the engine.
The shaft is still sealed by the stock seals, has never leaked ...

Here is mine, it's neat enough for me and I'm pretty fussy...
Not worth pulling off the inner primary unnecessarily in my opinion...
(Old pic, bike is a bit different now but forward set up is still the same)

    ? No, never..
I don't have reduced reach though, I have actually modified mine to 2" extended... have you heard of shifting issues? Mine is as it should be
