Motorists who are passing an emergency vehicle with flashing lights must now slow to 40km/h or face a big fine.

Hope they are only talking metro 60kmh areas, very unworkable on the 110kmh Hwys.

Apparently it's been in South Australia road law for a few years now, there have been cases there where the Boys in Blue park their car, flashing lights on, walk up the road a 100m, then laser every car passing by.

I slow to the 25kph with one eye on the mirror, the vehicle behind you will no doubt have seen the flashing lights and slowed (in theory) so there should be no danger

It's not law in the ACT but may as well be: put flashing lights or some bloke smoking a pipe or a dying turtle on the side of the road, and Canberra drivers will hit the skids to rubber neck. Can't help themselves. 

Sounds like a good plan for job creation and growth to me. Something like this comes to mind: 

i am a volunteer firefighter and yes some knobs dont think to well when passing cfa,police ect,but who is going to be watching/policing this,emergency workers are usually thin on the ground as it is,some one would have to be holding some sort of speed detector [only police have them].this is one of labours stupider ideas [ i understand they have good intentions ] but it wont work 99 % of the time.having said that i have been close to being hit a couple of times and you need to have your wits about you .but if someone speeds through and hits someone, a bloody fine wont help them at all.next we will all have a speed camera on our helmets...not. jmo.

On the odd occassion it happens I turn on the flashers. 

My old Man was done for doing this in PortWakfield 20 years ago still reminds us about it 

Gotta keep those govt cash registers clicking over. They keep on spending quicker than they steal it off us. 

I can understand why people should slow for accidents - which they already seem to do - but slowing down because some arrogant fuck thinks he/she is invincible and doesn't need to be careful  is absolute bullshit.  I stop my vehicle too.  I get out too.  Why isn't everyone slowing for me? 

Just got back from Vic. Heading over last week, crossing up West Gate bridge, traffic moving at 15/20ks, what a pain. On the way down I see there's been an accident, big mess, cops, fire brigade, ambulance, all lights flashing but its on the complete other side of the bridge. Don't know whether people were just gawking at the mess or applying the new rule. Does it really apply when the action's on the other side of a divided highway/road?

Seems accidents are already happening....
