Telescopic front end onto a 2008 Springer , has anyone done this already ?

I know it will have been done before now , just looking for input and hints and tips from anyone who has done so.

I know I'll need triple trees / forks / front fender / front caliper / headlight etc.

Maybe wheel and disc also ( tho' I'd like to keep the stock 18 inch front wheel to match the rear if at all possible !)

My Springer front end for now at least is cactus , there appears to be no repairing of the stock Springer forks in Australia.

I have located a Softail Standard front end complete , new bike take off ( The guy had fitted a SPRINGER front end from new WTF ??)

Springer has a 3/4 axle , donor will have a 25mm no doubt , ways and hints to get round that ?

I'm assuming the same headstock bearing arrangement and an "easy" straight swap there.

Hopefully keeping the stock ( internally wired !) Springer handlebars. Are the stock Springer risers gunna work ?

    Thanks in advance gents

Is the springer structurally stuffed or just needs refurbing?

The whole intrigue/reason for a springer is that beautiful fork in my opinion!

Surely there is a bushing kit or an engineering shop who could machine the required bits for it.

    Thanks guys for the replies

The Springer front on my 2008 CVO Springer is pushed back an inch. Long story short , Indian bird in a 5 series BMW stops dead from 30Km/H in a give way junction half a car length plus over the dotted line into a dual carriageway for no reason ( no cars coming in either lane FFsake!) and I tail end her.

My fault by default. Nobody in WA will/can "straighten" the bent Springer forks that I have found.

I had reckoned the "mechanicals and brakes" would be straightforward enough , thanks Chopa for the confirmation.

It is the wiring that may be the bugbear. What wring was the drama ? The headlight ? or was it the internally wired handlebars ?

I've not yet seen the new bike take-off parts , but the photos look ok , hopefully all the bits, axles , bolts washers spacers etc etc are there.

"New" Springer front ends are no longer available as a "built unit". they were until a couple of years ago , maybe 2012/3.

Now you have to get all the component parts (HUNDREDS) of them , and build them into a front end.

It's the "rear" black rigid main forks that show the obvious bend , the chrome "springer" forks may be OK , need to be stripped out and put on plate glass or whatever.

It will take 3 months plus to get the rigid "Diamond Black" forks , as they come in body colour dependent on the bikes' VIN ( CVO part you see !)

You can be sure HD don't have inventory sitting on the shelf already in colour (sorry "color") hence the delay thing , and that's best case scenario

The chrome "spring fork" is a 97 part number , so the same since 1996/7 and the same for all springer fronts no doubt up to 2010

Well , got the 2007 and up forks and chrome triple trees with lower bearing. Very good condition , but not as "new' as I thought "new bike take off" should have been.

Got the 4 piston caliper and axle and front fender also. All "new bike take off" , but I suspect from more than one bike over the years

Got a 21 inch front wire wheel with smooth rim , new bike take off from the same bike(s).

Got the chrome FXSTC type headlight.

    What's missing ?

Brake hoses , all the wheel spacers/washers etc etc . Top triple tree/steering head bearing , bearing spacers/washers , "C spanner" top nut.

Front wheel bearings/crush tube internal spacer and the brake disc

I'm trying to use the original front 18 inch CVO mag wheel and disc if I can , disc will need to be spaced right for the 4 piston caliper

That's probably the easy part...now the fun begins....

Thanks Chopa , yes I was imagining the OEM CVO Springer mag wheel/disc will need to spaced left/right to suit the stock Softail 4 piston caliper

On the 2008 Springer the caliper is mounted on the left side ( when sitting on the bike !) and so is the Telescopic front end which may help

There's also the stock Softail 25mm axle and the Springer 3/4 axle to be overcome...

Sorry folks , the forum is not letting me "cut and paste" or "copy and paste" so what gives with that ?

sorry to hear about your mishap Gregg.
    how'd it all go ?
    any pics ?
do you plan on changing it back to a springer front in the future ?
fckn love the springer front end, it's what makes the '08 CVO special.

Well ,cut a long story short , My CVO Springer is now all hunky dory. I DID NOT FIT THE TELESCOPIC FRONT END AFTER ALL !

That became "too hard basket", got to the Springer bars , internally wired of course, and the Springer bars don't fit regular telescopic triple trees.

That tipped the job out of contention with all the other dramas. So the New bike take-off telescopic front end was "swapped" direct for a 2009 Crossbones Springer front end.

All "Gloss Black" of course , not Black and Chrome like the CVO front end.

Guy was building a (quite nice !) Custom out of the Crossbones. He got my forks and trees, 4 piston Brembo caliper , Softail front fender , new Softail 21 inch wheel etc etc

I used the Ronnie's HD website to cross reference all the CVO Springer VS 2009 Crossbones part numbers and there was maybe 50+% the same , quite reassuring !

Printed off all the exploded diagrams for both models , showed me all the interchange parts. Had to use the Crossbones top triple tree giving the bike less rake.

Not quite a 100% bolt on , I used the CVO fender and mag wheel and caliper and disc and had a good mate turn up spacers to suit the CVO/Crossbones combo.

He helped me with the spanners as well , as lots of the process was a "2 persons job" as said by the youtube Springer Guru ( Italian Bloke as it happens , good video !)

I had to buy a Motion Pro Springer disassembly/reassembly tool , $55 Aussie dollars

Now has a slightly more upright stance , which looks quite good actually. I've had a few runs on it , has settled down quite well and is riding perfectly. Handles as well as before !

So in short , it can be done , and I did not lose my no claims by fixing it myself , just a bit labour intensive is all
