The space between the rocker covers and the tank on newer Sporty's is extremely tight.  Hard to imagine you would be able to remove the rockers without removing the tank.  I would remove the tank and the seat.  There is an electrical cover behind the rear cylinder which can also be removed.  That should make disconnecting the knock sensor easier.  I have the tech manual for 2014 Sportsters I'll see if I can find the procedure and post it.
