Low end combo, cams & heads or Ci & cams

I'm looking at doing a cam upgrade and still a bit unsure of the cam choice and combo I'll run with. It's a 14 dyna low rider and I'm happy riding under 5000rpm most times, looking for bottom to mid torque. I'm not sure to go with 110 conversion kit ( std comp) pistons and cam upgrade or head work/ screaming eagle cnc heads & cam . Don't want to loose my bottom end as I kinda like the standard torque curve . I have s/e tuner , s/e heavy breather, freedom radius pipes. Am tossing up with woods 222,Andrews 37h, S&S 583 cams. Any advice appreciated

    Yep intro first ;)

You need to work out your long term engine upgrade goals, 103, 107, 110 and build from there.

The S&S 583 cam was what I was recommended, but with stock 110 heads, if I was staying with a fairly standard 103.

However doing the compensator and primary chain tensioner before doing any other mods, (the Timken bearing upgrade is also highly recommended) is recommended, the stock compensator will fail if HP is increased to much.

Also are you converting the cam drive to gear drive ?

    Upgrading the oil pump ??

I'll let the more experienced guys weigh in, as I'm not well up on these engines yet, however I have built a lot of engines of many different designs and types, and from my research so far the items I mentioned are a must before increasing the load on them, by increasing HP, otherwise you will have problems latter on.

    Cheers

    Ken

Thanks ken my original plans were just a cam upgrade then I started thinking what if I just chuck in a bit more cash and do something else as well ( Ebay & screaming eagle catalog got the better of me) i won't be doing future upgrades because I don't want a fire breather just a bit more power over the torque I have already. I was going to leave it chain driven and yes I've read about the compensator before, thanks good idea .ive converted it to chain & sprockets other the the mods I stated earlier its stock.

Yeah about my thoughts too mate.

My first port of call will be the compensator as the stock one is a known weak point and replacing the stock primary tensioner, as they apparently over-tighten the primary chain and cause bearing failure.

Then I'll do cams, and if I can find them for a good price some 110 heads.

    Good luck :)

The 110 head are too hit and miss IMO. Some are crazy good and then others are like stock 103's with huge valves and too much spring pressure.

If you find a set of CNC'd heads like some MVA's or something off a 120R jump on them, but having your stock ones ported to the cam spec best bet. Finding a set of used 103ci heads is easy and relatively cheap then you can sell yours when you swap them over so not to be off the road too long.

If you are not afraid of the aftermarket, I'd consider one of the 110ci kits from S&S or Fuel moto, combine that with some nice heads and you will have a reliable weapon.

put any of those cams in, pull tank and re-use everything, get out of it for probably around $500
you would be able to sell those cams later quite easily if you decide to then go for bigger work

    Hi Lowwrider, as you said,
"I don't want a fire breather just a bit more power over the torque I have already"
I reckon the easiest most reliable option is to replace the V&H Big radius with a proven 2 into 1, then get a good tuner to work their magic.

Maybe down the track go 110 when me mates get more upgrades ( carnt have the beating me ) I rang hd dealer and can get the for $1400 , but I do know a good machinists- how much you rekon would cost to do heads myself , ported / valves& springs ???

Nice looking bike LR. I was going to say "Don't mod it" and then remembered I'd been thinking about getting a good tune on my bike. Spend your $$ wisely and be super careful with what you do yourself. Youtube is a great source of information.

Yeah pauly I'm not that good :) I didn't mean literally do the heads myself I meant get mine rebuilt over off the shelf items, it makes sense getting them ported to cam specs for optimum performance, I'm not sure if my guy has a flow bench would anyone recommend someone to rebuild/ port my heads in Sydney, I'm from the Campbelltown area but will travel

Well good to hear that your compensator and oil pump can be left alone and should be OK as is, does that mean I can leave mine alone too fellas ?? 2013 model ??

I thought they were a weak point, and needed upgrading as did the oil pump.

See both learning something already here Lowrider :)

And good to know about the 110 heads being hit and miss too.

    Cheers
