Chased around for some parts for my FLH
Parts cane be bought retail in US for ~US $30 each

    Two parts I needed...
One retails for US $30, the other one for U $27

Oz dealer (tempted to disclose the name, but figured the post would removed) - pm me if you want all facts... :)

This oz (well recognized dealer) quoted me ... hang on... wait for it... ok, here it comes...
First item US $ retail 32.98 - oz quote: $95.20 (not even in stock so will bring it home @ 300% profit (or more being a supplier)

Second item US $ retail $27.35 - oz quote $187.00 (in stock but(!) selling it @ 700% profit)

Sent the guy a question asking if he seriously got tangled up and confused himself with pricing on the items - Two days - an no reply - go figure - WTF!???

This guy is regarded to be top notch in oz - no way I would do business with someone importing stuff with that kind of profit margin - Go fuck yourself !!!

Happy to pass on the company name to anyone interested - this is just insane !!!!

If the figures stack up as you say,, it looks like you will be ordering those items from the US !!!!!  If you have not as yet bought items via the internet ,, its pretty painless..... Could you post up what the items  are, that over the top in aus compared to buying in the US ???

And they will be all for the extra import duties and taxes the Aussie merchants are pushing for to put us off getting better deals from overseas, because we now have other options than being ripped off here.

    Cheers

On my lookup you're after a cable and hub cap. Both parts appear to be listed by Harley as obsolete so without full bike id I can't verify what the official Aus price might be.
Two things to watch from US suppliers. Are the parts genuine or aftermarket and postage costs.  Don't know why but some US postal costs are huge. Then there can be the bank currency/transaction fees to add as well.

There should be no issue whatsoever if a person posts a fact about a price from one business and posts a fact about a price from another business.

    "it's all in the vibe"

If the post was just factual and not emotive , there would be no issue.

At first look at there prices it may look at being excessive but not knowing his operating costs it may be what they need to charge to stay in business.

Your on the money with valid arguments re-ripoff baby..
But on the other hand, time can come into play.
Have absolutely known I been listed as a "come in spinner"
BUT I wanted it NOW. Hence this would help in these crew thinking we is retards!

Not trying to defend the seller but you quoted retail price in the US not including post cost to get it here which would cut into some of the mark up. I would think the local seller doesn't bring single items in, he probably buys bulk and ships containers and being a retailer woulld have to pay full import duties on the goods. Add to that possible rent on premises, wages to staff and eventually profit. He might be overcharging a bit but not as much as you think . The postage costs I saw on ebay weren't high but that would be standard post possibly without tracking, fast shipping with tracking would more than likely be more, still cheaper from US but waiting and the pain if it's not right or damaged in post, have to balance in the end.

    Seriously....?! I mean seriously!?
The number of post actually defending this kind of ripoffs just blows my mind.
Some discuss insurance, other freight and import duty = for fuck sake get a grip!
Shipping to oz from US is not that expensive - and the time often exceeds (quicker) than having something send domestically

For anyone not sure, how about checking out J&P and what they offer - generally their prices is deemed expensive within US, but from a oz perspective comparing it with locals.... well, check it out and you will find out I guess.

Im not a fat wallet Harley rider - I ride because Ive been doing it for almost 40 years now where I need some parts from time to time - Not chasing NOS parts - oz local dealers cant get them anyway - but if they could they probably tried to slug you with another 1K% on top of its actual retail value

I have zero sympathy for any(!) business in oz overcharging the customer - then when people take note of this massive rip off and go elsewhere (off shore or internet), they start to complain.

    one word on this.... Sheeeeeeesh

As I said, not trying to defend them. Yes ,overpriced and a ripoff but not quite by the extent you think. Everything we buy here costs more than it does overseas and usually by more than just the exchange rate, even down to t-shirts that cost fuck all to make still sell for $20 here even whole bikes if you look at the 2017 model don't hit 20k till you get to the tourers in the US, thankfully we have ebay and they are trying to fuck that up to.

I've recently gone through a massive fk around experience with JP. I would've gladly bought local but I stuffed it, because a few of the parts were unavailable in the country. So I bought a whole order from Overseas and they stuffed my pistons, sent me the wrong ones, I had to send em back, etc massive fuck around.

Go through that once or twice and you'll see the value in buying local in some instances.

I don't comment much but in this case i feel the need to agree completely with chinashop and kiwi . I have also been buying bits as needed from Colt for many years , If you want sound knowledge and experience go to Colt if you want bolt on stuff that you know you can get elsewhere get it . Just don't try to justify your discontent with calling him a ripoff .
No one forces you to buy there and for what it is worth i am almost certain Colt will tell you the same .
    Thank you..

I've been watching this thread and trying desperately to hold my tongue, this is my third go at restraining myself, and I've failed, so here goes.
Forgive me if I rant or go into a lengthy, verbose response.
The issue here is simply put, a symptom of the "Australia" we have created, and many of you have touched on my points in your posts.
Nowhere else in the world is there a country with a standard of living like the one we have. Nowhere else in the world is there a country without a massive poor working class that lives from hand to mouth, we are blessed with a society that allows people to work hard and live relatively well in comparison to most of the world whose poor working class work very hard and live badly comparatively speaking. I have had the pleasure, if you like, of living and working in places where the majority of people live in poverty and tin or cardboard shacks and shanty towns, eeking out a living, often via the barrel of a gun.
Our way of life and standard of living demands that things cost a lot of money, higher in all cases, no matter what thing you choose to compare, be it a Harley, a loaf of bread or a pair of shoes, than most if not all, other countries in the world.
What also affects us is the size of the available market, we dont have a market consisting of a population of 150 million people, we have only 24/25 million people spread out over one of the largest countries in the world.
But we are also capitalists and educated and we will vote with our feet and take our business to places where we feel we get better value for our money or a bigger bang for our Buck, this by the way, undermines ourselves, especially when we import from overseas, just saying it, not critising the decision.
I fear that the way of life we have created is becoming harder and harder to sustain and that we will see our collective standard of living dropping sharply over the coming years, and a lower class of citizen accepting lower wages simply to be able to make ends meet, and mostly not doing that either, the continuos lowering of our immigration standards is not helping either. We see Aussie companies, every week, getting caught out employing illegals working for below minimum wage and living in conditions most of us would absolutely not accept.
We see more and more projects being awarded to foreign companies, in all cases, because of lower prices, and at the same time we see our state governments blowing the backside out of their budgets, we have seen our manufacturing sector disappear almost completely, cars, tyres, household white goods, etc. to other low cost countries like China, Malaysia etc.
Essentially the downward spiral we are in will not stop, and the utopia we have created is crumbling and we will end up no different, in the most part, to many of the so called 1st world countries that do have a large poor working class and an out of control crime rate, coupled with high unemployment, its inevitable, and to be honest, upsetting, at least to me and my small family.

In closing, we will always be a great country, because that's what we Aussies are, but we might just be a lot like most of the rest of world in many of the comparisons we make in our daily lives in the not too distant future.

God bless Australia and it's amazing people.

I have been given a couple of prices for a S & S Oil pump and cam plates in Australia and they were  $1750 and $1800. I have found them in the USA that I can get landed for under a grand AUD.
