Hi I am new to the forum and I have narrowed my bike purchase down to a couple of models of the Sportster. My question is are the number of Klms on the bike an issue and what should I look for in terms of wear and tear at say 20,000 vs 40,000 klms or should I be looking for a bike with say 10,000 Klms. I am thinking the bike is very reliable as the basic engine has been around for a long time and is very simple in terms of construction, so any input or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers Greg

well sportsters improved a lot in reliability when the evo motor arrived, then improved even more when they went from 4 speed to 5 speed.
but when they went to rubber mounted motor, they lost the trap door to the gear box via primary. and all 2004 and up require the motor to be removed from the frame. and then dismantled, to get to the gear box.
but the pre rubber mount models , you feel the vibration more. on the 5 speed models does not feel too bad. I am used to what a Harley feel's like as started off riding them in late 70's.
I have stated this before, my old shovel still being ridden by new owner & when I sold it it had 1 million k's on it.
so if a bike has been maintained right, who cares how many k's it has.

Agree; at 10,001 kms all Sporty are programmed to blow up (someone forgot to tell my one as I'm just shy of 80k...lol)
While low mileage is a good theory, if the oil has not been changed or the maintenance not done or its been flogged to death then any bike is going to have the potential for issues.  Look for a bike with a good service history, EFI (no carbs to mess with), Belt drive (no chain to adjust all the time) and rubber mount engine and you should be good.

There's so many good deals out there for low km Harleys, there's really no reason to buy one with any more than 4 or 5k on it.  I've bought three Sporty's over the years and of the two near new ones that I bought, one had 250 kilometers on it, and my current bike had 3000 km on it.  It pays to shop around and look interstate if you have to.

Thanks for that information, I was just trying to get some feedback as to what the pitfalls are of buying a high Klms bike.

Thanks again, with the clutch issue, are there any warning signs - like shudder or slipping?

I ride mine most days. I now have over 160k highway kms on it.  It has been a very reliable bike all up. Regular services, and letting it warm up before riding, and ride it like you stole it. It still goes fantastic, just has a few more squeaks than it used to. I did not expect it to be this reliable when I bought it.
