    Hey people,

I've fit-up a few bars on bikes now, but not with this type of riser setup with digital gauges built into top clamp etc. I would like to replace the OEM old school bicycle style bars with 32" wide Drag bars 0deg rise with 4.5" pullback.

    My concerns are:
    A) the indicators look like they'll hit the tank hanging off the bars so I will need to relocate to fork tubes yes?
    B) hopefully won't need risers to clear the tank, I'm thinking no..?
    C) Is internal wring of bars difficult? I havn't done them like that before and the standard bars have wiring all external, I can't imagine it'd be too hard, and would prefer a cleaner look of no wiring if its easy enough.

Anyone got any bars they could recommend, I'm looking for chrome bars, and the Indicator re-locators

Anyone done this before please chime in with your experience

if you go harley drag bars below are some points
    - indicators will be fine
    - you will be very close to the top of the fork tube bolts, you can buy riser spacers
    - internal wiring is not hard many videos on youtube, just unclipping the wires from the plugs is a pain
    - tank clearence will be fine

I have internally wired bars on a couple of bikes before and ease of difficulty depends on the shape of the bars.  As long as they are reasonably straight, it should be fairly easy.  I found using a nylon cord works well with the wiring attached to one end.  Pull the cord through the bars and pull the wires through.  Make sure the bars you use a pre-cut for internal wiring.  I remember once trying to modify a set of existing bars and it was very difficult, because you need elongated holes.

Thanks AIHD8, so you reckon I won't need to relocate the indicators with drag bars (without risers)...?
hhmmm looks damn close mate, just debating whether to get the indicator relocators at the same time as the bar purchace as I don't want to have to wait (not riding) another 2 weeks for parts to finish it off, & they aren't cheap to buy either if you buy quality.
Maybe the bar riser is a cheaper option but I can't see the riser protection housing still covering everything neatly with a riser in there...maybe I should pull the bars off for a look at it first.

Thanks for the advice Kingchops, the idea makes alot of sense.

Cropduster the existing bar riser looks like one piece, as in the pic below, so to have a spacer between the top triple clamp and the riser would make it have a gap that doesn't look OEM if you get my drift unless I'm missing something about the shape of the riser, maybe I should just pull it apart for a better look first.

The flat track bars you speak of have a slight rise already don't they? Like a set of Mini bars on a BMX without the crossbar for a pad, I was looking at them also but stuck on drag bars for the moment, keep us posted on the swap-out if you can, I'm keen to see it.

Good luck trying to remove Custom's stock riser...I thought about doing that, but it hides all wire connectors, and thought it would be a pain to get them all re-organized :( I read that you can get a Sportster Low's riser to replace it or something since it also hosts all the display and speedo housing. Stuck with the original riser, so kinda limited to which bars I can install without spoiling the looks or going too high on the bars. If I were to do it properly, I'll re-route all the wires that go behind the stock riser.

Cropduster, I think your 48 and my XL1200C is like apples and oranges at the top of the triple clamp there, your tank seems higher too, your OEM riser looks lower to begin with, its already got a lowdown bar look stock compared to my bicycle beach cruiser style looking unit hahaha
What you've done with the flat tracker bars looks sweet, the powder coating seems to match the clamps well too nice work.

AIHD48 no problem there man its on the cards, just gotta pull the trigger on the bars, finding them at the moment with hidden wiring holes and the correct dimensions I'm looking down the barrel of $180AU, can't seem to find anything cheaper unless I go cheap and forget hidden wiring....(that seems to add a good $80-90 on good quality bars) and then whether to get indicator re-locator kit to forks which I think i'll have to incase it falls over standing still the bar mounted indicators will definitely dent the tank.

Shadowrider no chance removing the stock riser, I love it, as you say it hides the crap and looks nice doing it, so its staying, I reckon I can get drag bars on it without extra risers just need to get rid of the indicators...and keep the wires concealed in the bars for that clean look. Need to keep shopping, there doesn't seem to be any cheap options, although I could drill my own wiring holes into in cheaper bars....gotta have a think on this, be nice to have a Bench Drill for the job rather than hand drill...
