Cartridge forks, HD Vs Progressive

    Hi All,
I was at the HD shop during the week and asked about the cartridge fork kits. Got Progressive 940’s on the back and they make forks look a bit ordinary. I was surprised that the HD kit was considerably cheaper than the Progressive cartridge kit. Does anyone know what the difference is, I thought the HD kit was the same, but obviously not.

    Thanks in advance

Basically progressive forks use springs that push back harder as they are compressed so they only work when the forks are being compressed, braking etc.
Cartridge forks have a spring on one side to handle compression and the cartridge the other side to handle decompression so the up down movement is being controled not just the up.
I fitted Harley’s premium ride cartridge system and like it.
    Cheers

I have Progresive's cartridge monoshock up front. A vast improvement over stock fork springs.

From what I can tell the HD cartridge kit seems very similar to the Progressive kit.

+1. What Hilly said. I have these on my 2012 ultra. Way better than stock.

So by that do you mean Ohlins?

After doing a 1285km over two days down through the Snowny high country its time for the upgrade.

    Thanks Leachy

After riding jap bikes for years then getting a nightrain I couldn't believe how bad the suspension was.
I rode it twice ripped the front forks out and put in the progessive monotube with only 1spacer added.
Changed the bike completely, glad I didn't put the second one in or it would be hard as a rock.
As others have said there is better out there but for the money it's good thing.
Just have to sort the back end out now.

Well I am happy with the heavy duty ones but I weigh a bit more than you do. (not a great deal though)
If you regularly take your missus for a ride then maybe the heavy duty ones are for you too. However if most of your riding is just you then prolly the regular ones.
I have heard of blokes getting the heavy duty ones only to find out they are too firm/harsh then going to the standards and being much happier with them.
Both Rollies Speed shop(who I bought them from) and a local indy dealer recommended the heavy duties.
Also keep in mind the shocks give a bit after a thousand klms or so.
Mine are still set at close to the minimum setting.
I have not lowered mine at all as there are some bumpy roads round here.

    Hi Lucky

I did my rear shocks first, put in 13" Progressive 490's made a huge difference and highlighted how crap the front stock suspension is. I was looking at the Progressive cartridge kit but was worried it was going to be too hard after reading a few different comments, i weigh about 83kg and generally it just me on the bike. I was also looking at Ohlins but a bit expensive. Im not trying to turn this into a sports bike, I still have one of those just something that actually absorbs the shitty road surfaces.
