For a while now, I've been trying to come up with the ultimate luggage solution for the Sporty.  I currently use a detachable backrest with a Viking backpack.  It does a decent job, but it's not ideal.  I was hoping that the backpack would act as a decent rider backrest when packed, but you need to pack it really full to be able to lean back on it.  I know most would say that saddlebags are the way to go, but to he honest I really don't like saddlebags.  I don't like the way they look on the Sporty and the best ones you can find are not detachable.  Plus they're not big enough.  For example, you can't fit a full face helmet in most of them.

Here's the criteria for my ultimate luggage solution:

    1) Must be completely and easily detachable,
    2) must provide a good rider backrest,
    3) must be big enough for a full face helmet and plenty of extra stuff,
    4) must be lockable,
    5) must be easily accessible without removing straps etc.

So, I think I've found the solution.  I was going through the parts and accessories catalog and came across a solo tour pack rack for the Sporty (53655-04A).  This rack attaches to the detachable mounts and provides a flat mounting surface behind the rider.  So from there you can mount a top box to act as both luggage and a back rest.  There's several Harley tour packs that can be used (see pic below).  But while these suit the bike, they're too small and look a bit flimsy for the price (around $990AUD).

So I've put the rack on order and should get it tomorrow ($215 from HH).  I've also been looking at top boxes I can use.  I'm surprised that I've never seen this rack before.  One issue I noticed is that it says it won't fit the 1200C, but on doing some research on the web I've seen plenty of pictures with one mounted on 1200C's and Superlow's which are basically the same setup.

I've been searching around for a good sized top box to go on it and have been looking at Givi boxes.  They don't really suit the style of a Harley, but they are a decent size and very well made.  Some of the medium size Givi boxes will fit 2 full face helmets and are lockable and detachable.

Sporty Solo Tour Pak rack (53655-04A):

KC, I am in a similar boat as you, I do not like the traditional saddlebags. I recently caught up with a mate and he had one of these "Bikers Friend" Barrel bags on his Fatboy. I really liked it, it's just a 12"PVC pipe covered in vinyl (looks like leather) with end caps with pockets and an adjustable backrest, the backrest is held on to the barrel with velcro. Oldmate reckons its excellent for long trips, the website has different sizes shown. I think I might give them a go, if anyone has one let us know how you rate them.

The only part of your criteria that I don't think it would meet is being lockable, the end caps do up with zips.

I've looked at barrel bags and they are a decent solution.  They at least provide a decent size.  But I've found on the Sporty any type of soft bag just doesn't provide the backrest that I'm looking for.  Also, ideally I want something you can lock.  Both to the bike and also the bag itself.

I've been looking at something like this Givi v47nn top box. It's pretty much what I'm after. It's lockable, it's big, it's got a quick detach plate so you can lock it to the rack and you can also lock the box. I really like the idea of being able to park the bike and lock a full face helmet, gloves and even jacket on the bike. The only drawback is that these don't typically suit the style of a Harley. This one at least is one of the better looking ones, it's mostly blacked out and doesn't have any red reflectors on it.  It even has an optional backrest pad you can add.

Saddle bags keep the weight down low for better handling. Just be aware that a fully loaded top box may change the way the bike handles on twisty roads when cornering at speed and also low speed manoeuvres.

I have detachable bags but they aren't waterproof or lockable.

Looking forward to seeing a pic of your final setup KC.

+1 good point on the weight distribution Rodders.  The Givi box recommends a max. load of 10kg, so you wouldn't want to go beyond that.  There's some really nice detachable saddle bags for the Sporty that I was looking at, but what puts me off is having to relocate the rear indicators.  I'm not really a fan of that either.

Be a bad ass in your street. What about a basket on the handlebars.

Got hold of the touring rack today, and I'm glad to say it fits the Sporty Custom just fine.  It clears the dual seat nicely at the top and sides.  Also bit the bullet and ordered the Givi v47nn tech box.

Thanks kc. I'm curious about this as I was looking at this kind of set-up as a touring option for my dyna. Agree with you on all fronts re practicality and looks which is a bit of a compromise

Well done KC. Does look a lot better than a basket over the handlebars. Don't forget to put up pics with the top box fitted

This one says 2004+, not sure if there's an older model available for 2003 and below Sporty's. Do the older models have a detachable setup?

Thanks for putting that up, it's an option I can use.
I'd also be interested in seeing it with the mounted givi top box.
