Strapping bike down on lift and on trailer.......advice please

So I was reading a post on here recently about a guy that had his bike up on a lift, removed the front wheel and oops it rotated back on to the back wheel and off of the stand! Oh fuck!
Some of you sharp, eagle eyed monsters may have noticed, but did not comment, in my recent posts that my fatboy Lo is on a lift and is NOT tied down! Well that’s because, to be honest, I have no fucking clue where to attach the tie downs to the bike!

So, help me out please! It got me thinking how the hell I would tie the bike down to a trailer if I had to! I have a lot of experience tying down my sons’ mx bikes but not a clue on my fatboy Lo and I don’t want to damage anything or scratch the paint!

Lift has 4 anchor points that are obviously there to tie the bike down. Trailers typically have a multitude of anchor points.

Thanks in advance for your normal funny sarcastic comments that get me grinning, but also for the knowledge and experience you guys always pass on.

when I had my fatboy I put straps around the rear swing arms ( 2 straps ), and used soft lambs wool covers on the handle bars ( 2 straps ) and for added safety on the forks where the guard attaches. so 6 straps in all this was in a trailer, on my lift I just used 4 straps

Gotta be honest I didn't notice, probably cause I don't tie mine down unless I'm fighting with bolts etc that won't come undone, takin off heads etc where you might lean a bit on the frame.
The tyre clamp usually does it but if in doubt I use those Harley Hog Tie Soft Hooks at the riser or triple tree, one each side and not very tight, just tensioned so you don't put necessary long term pressure on the fork seals.

FWIW, I bought a handlebar style harness for a scooter I had. Didn't matter that there was no area on the bars to attach a tie down, It had sleeves which went over the grips. Something similar to the photo. Mine had tie down straps attached. I used it on the Harley a couple times and it worked a treat.
Found some similar for you on Gumtree with the straps in Bayswater

Mate, on the trailer I use Ace bikes there fixes. They are a purpose designed strap that goes over the rear wheel and fix/hook onto the trailer floor or side. You just have to get the angles right.
I use them on my fatboy and it works a treat. By doing this I don’t have to compress the front forks very much at all to hold the bike in place.
Google them and it will be evident how easy they are to use.
    Cheers. Buck

I tie mine on the trailer same as Hog bike transport, I put strap around fork tube just above the front guard mounts, This way the bikes suspension still works as if riding it. My front wheel also sits in a wheel lock at front, When I want a normal box trailer, The cut out part sits back in place, It's mounted to a piece of alloy checker plate across front wall on inside.

    .
Below, is Pizz's old Deluxe, transported from Newcastle to Regional Victoria, The starps at front guard mounts, do the work. The straps on bars were only for a precausion.  He said it never moved and never had to retighten straps.

When you put the straps on a lift you don't need to crank then down hard.  Just enough to take up the slack, then a touch more.

I usually use this type of strap with the cam buckle (?) instead of those fucking ratshit (ratchet) thingys.
Think I got mine from Bunnings but they were blue,

I have a similar setup and once the bike is strapped in they dont move. I use 6 Gator Straps with lambs wool soft covers in an 8x5 trailer

Nice set up mate! Do you tie the back down at all? The ace bike straps that Buck uses look like the dogs balls!

You may already know this but when you have the bike up on your lift
simply put something under the wheels. Its amazing how much stabler the bike becomes

Hey bonkerz where about on the fatboy Lo would I attach the straps?

I don't like giving advice on this because sometimes you need to have a good look at your lift and see if the proper lift attachment points are the best place.  With some lifts if you use the attachment points and tie everything down you can't move the lift (so funny to watch) up or down.  And if you do put the straps on with he lift up and the jack drops and all the straps become instantly lose and useless....
That's why I like the hooks.  You can attach them anywhere, or even wrap them around and attach them to themselves.    I think (to the lift) I used the bars that go crossways (between the bars the bike sits on) to atatch to when I last used one of the repco style lifts.

To the bike I use folded towels to protect the paint then go over the bottom of the handle bar, one strap on each side.  On the back usually try to attach to the highest frame point possible, or the shockers if I find that too hard, or thought the wheel.  The straps are just for an emergency so don't start crushing and bending shit cranking them down hard.

I got a set of tie down straps from MCA in Auburn. Just the normal hook on each end and pull the belt design - BUT - on the top end they have both the hook and an additional loop of the strap material. (about a 100mm loop)
This allows you to loop around either side of the handlebar and it wont damage the chrome like a hook may. The lower hook just mates with the tie down points on your lift.

    Easy, cheap, no damage.
