F100 Getting Ready for The Alice

This is my new (to me) F100 4WD.
Plan is to repair the little rust in it and give it a general tidy up ready for a run from Sydney to Port Augusta, The Alice and back to Sydney via Longreach.
Looking at picking up a slide on camper prior and will then tow one of the FXR's in an enclosed trailer.
Best of both worlds I reckon.
Only about 378 sleeps to go.

    Mickle,
She's running dual Petrol tanks now and I am looking at dropping in a long range rear tank just to be sure.
The 351 is a bit thirsty.

what diff's is it running? I had a 302 F350 was a tough truck Danna diff strong 4 speed GB , but used a lot of fuel, the 351 normally needs premium. is it Carb or EFI?

    Krash,
Its a 351 Clevo with Carby.

Running a Ford 9" Diff but I am still to check the ratio.
Only numbers on the Diff are 9A18    97531      3.5 Lock
I assume that I misread it and its a 9A16 which would be Ford 9" Ratio 3.5 Full Locker.
This would be right for my truck according to any axle codes I can find.

I have not checked this yet.

The Gearbox is a New Process 435 Four Speed

Spent a bit of time so far freeing up cables and cleaning up the brakes and hubs etc. Seems the brakes pads were all changed recently but they were pretty grubby.
Drove it back from VIC and she didn't miss a beat (Except where I switched it back over to the empty tank whilst leaving a rest stop) all in all a good truck with minimal rust and that is being cut out and new plates welding in next.

I found this old advert online and although I dont want anything this big you get the idea.

drove an '80 f100 351c for a work truck [ long ago] and it was a pig to drive with  the plastic bodied carter carb...and was a little thirsty as well,we fitted a holley 600 vac secondary carb ,free flowing air cleaner and a "less" restictive exhaust ,and away it went, a joy to drive and not bad on fuel for its size and the work it did.

All sounds good to me, my f350 was a carb, never any problems, I always drove it hard & carried big loads. seemed bullit proof, strong GB & Diff your one would have a front diff too & transfer case? I've never owned a F series 4WD but they would be strong.
I've got an old Toyota HiLux Diesel 4WD tray back now. it's ok I go off the beaten track. but I could go most places with the F350 and it had a nicer ride over rough dirt roads.
I think if you can get a back like in the pic. would be perfect with a trailer for your ride!! Just remember secure bike down right and pull up into your trip double check it's secure!! I would invest in a front wheel?? rocker ( push bike over it & the rear steel rocker comes up the back, then a ratchet the down over the front wheel. like they use on bike dyno's). I've seen bikes wrecked in inclosed trailers. from owner not double checking the bike secure.
Also I'd make sure radiator & cooling in top shape for lot of low speed hot weather driving off road, but the manual 351 less worry than the auto's.
    enjoy yourself m8!!

Good point, I had a Holley on mine, just had it tuned and went ok was a 302. if I was changing the carb I would look for a 450cfm 4 barrel, as can set them up to work nice and improved fuel economy. a mate had one on a 350 chevy in a holden HQ ute, him and I drove it Sydney to gold coast with good load on it. was getting good economy. the 450cfm good as four even bore small throats, you have enough power & torque so don't need more.

    Yeh
Not sure what I will do with seats but thinking maybe some Bronco or F250 Buckets with the centre console.
I will have a fridge in the back as well as storage for water etc. Also have water storage on my M/Cycle trailer if we take that.

Looking forward to getting away, only problem with planning early is having to wait so long to get outa Sydney.
