The strange thing about the migration issue is that it doesn’t effect all bikes. Being the owner of a M8, and being a member of the US forum, I actually check my trans oil every week (!) as I’m well versed in the stories regarding this. But, regardless of whether I ride hard, have it dyno tuned, do long trips or commute, it doesn’t lose a drop. And that’s over 25,000km of use.
If there was some inherent design flaw then you’d think all bikes would exhibit it.

Same with sumping - I’ve actually tried to get my bike to sump because I plan on keeping it and want to get any issues sorted under warranty. But again, it performs exactly as it should.....I just can’t induce any sumping. And because I know quite a few folks with M8 tourers, all of which are perfectly fine too, I can only assume it’s a minority of bikes that are effected with either issue.

I just wonder how some people run in and treat their bikes. If you look at the majority of people complaining of these issues on the US forum, many of them have, in other threads, spoken of how they never “babied” their bikes during run in, they ran them in hard etc. My best guess is the two are related.

Clearly the OP is aware of these potential issues. I think the best advice for the OP is to be mindful of some sort of perspective.

    Carry on!

This is exactly why i don't usually be part of forums... full of dickheads.

I thought a forum was for asking questions and having discussions.....

And just FYI, i was a regular participant on this forum for many years a while back. Looks like it's deteriorated.

    I'm out.

    Hi Adam 76
    hope your still with us

I stopped to help a lad that could not start his bike one morning the temp was about  -1  6:30am and I was hungover
just as I was removing his seat to check the battery he dropped his guts and I got a mouth full of it

Just saying  I am no hero for stoping  and he's not a cunt he just had wind , you have to roll with the punches bro

Haha I nearly spat my coffee out reading that this morning! Thanks for the laugh. You're a more patient person than I am. The moment someone else's fart goes into my mouth is the moment I either leave or get angry ... But not helping anybody after that

To be honest here - both the sumping/fluid migration and the 111 clacking is making me second think my choices.
I think I'll be buying a Goldwing and getting it triked - it'll cost a shitload more but it's worth paying for reliability.”

If you read any marque/model forum you’ll be hit with all sorts of issues.......if people based their decisions around forum rants no one would buy anything......

    Pretty much.
If you’re hell bent on a trike, there’s a guy in W.A who does trike conversions on virtually any Harley or even metrics. Pick up a low km ‘17 twin cam and convert it, and your mother has a brother named robert.

    You’re overthinking it.
When I bought my Twin Cam HD, it was all about the failing cam chain tensioners, if I’d let the paranoia get to me I’d have never bought a bike. 5 years on and not a drama in the world.
Mate I garauntee the Goldwing will have it’s own idiosyncrasies (a quick google search indicates transmission issues), and a VW trike will have its share as well.
Buy a new HD, or buy a used one, or don’t at all. Life’s too short to procrastinate over a potential mechanical failure though. Best of luck with whatever decision you make.

Yep, as above. Let’s get this into perspective. There is a new thread about this on the US forum. They count around 15 owners, all understandably vocal, with sumping issues. Their best guess is at least 250,000 Touring M8’s riding around in the states. Can’t get mine to do it for love or money.
The migration issue - I’ve said it before but out of around 20 M8 Owners I know, none have this problem, including mine. If you read the stories on their site, it’s virtually guaranteed to happen at high rpm. Well, Fred Badcock, from ProCycle Dyno in Brisbane, a well known tuning guru, has dyno tuned plenty of touring M8’s and I was at his workshop to get mine done after the dealer dyno tune turned out crap. We talked about this potential issue prior to him doing his thing, and he was quite frank - he hadn’t seen it in any bike he’d tuned. We checked my gear oil level prior to the dyno, full. Fred spent 5 hours hammering my bike on his dyno...... We rechecked the gearbox - full.

Buy what you want, but the M8 is a sweet bit of gear, and easily the best Harley I’ve ever riden. 25,000km absolutely trouble free. Run it in carefully. Remember that it’s not just seating rings. Brakes need to bed in, gearboxes need to bed in. Overthinking things can also lead to shooting one’s self in the foot.
