So, this wind buffeting thing...

On the way home the other day with my new to me 17 SGS I encountered a considerable amount of wind buffeting. Most appeared to be coming from up under the fairing.
I use a good quality full face helmet, which seals the visor at the front. And I think this may be to my disadvantage as once I cracked the visor open it stopped a lot of the head shuddering, eyesight blurring vibration through my head. Anything over about 90kph seemed to bring it back.

I’m booked in tomorrow to get the adjustable side wind deflectors and a triple tree deflector installed.

I don’t want to do without my $1k+ Shoei though. Hopefully the deflectors will do their job.

How tall are you? I’m a tad over 6’2” and get the same thing, mostly with head winds. Maybe you need the screen with the big kick up in the top lip.

I’m going to trial a couple of screens as well there tomorrow. I’m hoping I’ll get away with just the deflectors, as the wind over the screen seems ok. I’m about 6’1” so not far off you.

The deflectors i was referring to are not the fairing adjustable ones it the fork deflectors.......they aint ging to win any fashion prizes but wk well. The screen is the most important part of the puzzle. You need the top of it to be around the bridge of your nose height for decent airflow OVER your head at speed. The aero is crazy with these fairings and in the wet the rain on the front of my wet weathers gets sucked back off the suit and goes forward at 100kph! Shows the turbulence behind the screen

Fork deflectors is what you want, they have Stainless HD ones, Plus try a Wind splitter screen, They have a flick up around top edge, HD have actually started making one this year, they work well,

These are the chrome fork mounted wind deflectors that stop the wind coming up from under the fairing

Agree with the 10" windsplitter screen. Best I've had. (well only the second one I tried) post 14 tourers have the fairing vent which significantly reduces the buffeting. Looks like Tim also has the optional (SGs?) rotating plastic air deflectors under the fairing. Good on hot days to redirect air upwards but can cause buffeting when open. I couldn't find the chrome fork mounted ones anywhere to fit my bike. I think China and or Mickle once had them and made use of a dremel to fit them.

I ended up getting a 10” Windsplitter fitted along with the adjustable deflectors and a triple tree deflector. Reduced the buffeting by about 95% I recon. Very happy with the results.
The only thing with the 10” screen is I have to sit up pretty straight to see over the lip and took a while to get used to the optical distortion a bit.

They aren’t that ugly Tim. I may have a hunt around and see if I can find some.

Excellent outcome, enjoy the ride and with that distortion, be careful at roundabouts.

Have a look at Freedom Shields in the USA. Ive had 2 of them now and highly recommend them. I'm only 5'7 and on my last Street Glide I only needed a 5' one. They are reasonably priced at $100 USD plus $60 USD for freight.

Other options don’t make sense. 10” clear HD windsplitter screen about $230 from your dealer. Look great, work very well. Done 8k on the new bike with it.

Agree with you. 2011 SG, I'm 182cm tall and just rode around Australia with the 8" screen I've had on for 110,000kms since new. Works really well. Tried a 10" version briefly but it was to tall andI had to look through it.

The freedom shields, shields are optically correct as well,so no distortion with them,
I ran a 7" screen from freedom shields ,now running a 5" works great...I'm 5'7"
The rest of the kit is the chrome Harley fork deflectors (work well) and a kuryakyn wind deflector on the bottom tree

Absolutely, seek over the screen, wind buffet are below. I placed a Kyrukin 10" screen on my ride, and worked perfectly. Lady would not come on ride with me before with shorter screen, as she was buffetted, and blown away on the back., Now happy girl on passenger seat.

An update:
Fitted 10” Windsplitter screen - triple tree wind deflector - adjustable under fairing deflectors. Could not get used to the optical distortion in the 10” screen and the fact I had to sit up straighter to see over it so swapped it out for the 7” version.

I reckon 90% of the buffeting is gone - and can simulate 100% by putting my hands out and blocking the wind coming up from under the front. Also tucking my chin down slightly removed the effect. I wear a full face Shoei and I reckon it’s contributing to the buffeting affect.

Either I go with the fork mounted deflectors or try a open face helmet. Everyone who has the fork deflectors seem to like the results. On a newer 17 SGS where’s my best option to get them? HD dealerships?

After this I have no more excuses. Lol

Go the fork mounted deflectors. Had them on 3 bikes now and they work a treat.
