Hi, can anyone shed some light on what would cause this disaster?, bike has original 40k, very well maintained, oil and filter services no more that 6k apart!
Properly warmed prior to rides, ridden within the standard with the occasional push to overtake.
    Any advice is appreciated
    Cheers

My guess is its dropped a lifter. Needle bearing has failed, dropped its guts thru the cam gear drive.

Yes, but any ideas on what would cause this to happen?

Just component failure, it happens, and not attributed to servicing or riding styles, good luck with your repairs hope your up and running soon.

    Yes, fair enough.

Thank you, yes have been reading up on the bearing you speak of, had not heard anything about the INA... bearing before, but seem to be the Achilles of the EVO.
For the repair, I’m just going to keep it factory standard with original cam, it’s got enough power/torque for my weight and luggage on trips.
    Cheers

Any reason you wouldnt drop in a cam? You'd lose nothing, and gain a bit without compromising anything.

I read that it’s best for longevity to keep them standard.
The more I search on the Net the more info can be a bit conflicting.
I guess everything was working fine until this, so I was good with the standard set up

Definitely drop in a bolt in cam and fit full compliment cam bearings while you are in there

Stock lifters and the stock cam bearing are just not that good a quality mate. You're rolling the dice running them mush past 40 K klm's IMHO.

When you say bolt cam you mean the Andrew E27?

Yes I just didn’t know about this weak point, or I can assure you I would have upgraded the parts.
When this failure happened, I’d just ridden Sydney to Alice Springs down to Uluru and was just out of Griffith when she just stopped!
Kept thinking thank fuck it didn’t happen in the outback

That bearing was the first thing I replaced on my old Evo.
Drop in an EV3 cam as well, although the Ev13 is more mild.
In an Evo you can run a  bloody lumpy cam and have as a good an engine life as stock.  Look where running a pure stock motor got you - should have done the bearing up front and the S&S breather is a good idea (I ahve run one for 10years).

Like I said, had I'd read the Evo bearing issue, I would have done the same as you, simply did not know!, as far as cam is concerned I'm hearing what you blokes are saying, so I'm gonna see what my cost is to fix the old girl, and see how much extra with the bigger cam.

Have a look at this address below and pick what would be best for your style of riding. Lean towards low to midrange power rather than hi end I would think.

just thought I would add, if it was me and was in your budget. I would change valve springs to beehive springs, as do not need as much valves seat pressure. so will take more wear and tear off the valve train.

Yes, been looking at price list, not too expensive really.
Yeah I prefer the torque rather that revs.

I’ll chat with mechanic today to see where I’m at with the cash, it adds up quick!
    Thanks for the knowledge fellas

You may get lucky and not need a new oil pump.  Evos had some pretty good filtering in the cam chest.
