whining noise from Primary

    Out for a ride today noticed this noise coming from primary, off throttle approaching stop sign ,whirring type whiny noise stops when pull in clutch can any one tell me what this possibly could  be, I understand it will be guess work without hearing it but I could use a clue as to what to expect chain adjuster ? compensator ? its a 2012 103c Roadking 38,000k thanks in advance

    with my limited knowledge & probably a dumb statement  but wouldn`t the noise be there all the time if that was the case? as it stops when clutch is in

    OK Hilly Thanks again mate . I checked out a couple of Video`s on You tube I now know what ya talking about ,spewin this happened at the start of the good weather. spose its a good time to check everything else in the primary . I mostly do a lot of work myself ,have done on all my bikes but failing eyes, patience  & lack of tools  haha looks like a trip to the workshop cheers

    re-install the chain adjuster, 
    shouldn't need to take to workshop (or backyarder), open primary and have a look around

    if its severe you will see damage

    No workshop manual for torque settings  no bearing puller / installer , the job itself don`t look to be beyond my capabilities but yeah taking the outer primary off would be a good start cheers

    well I don`t know for sure as stated in OP whining noise heard & hilly suggested it could be inner bearing but won`t know until have a sticky beak either way I am grateful to all opinions cheers

    Could be inner primary bearing ,clutch hub bearing ,gear box mainshaft bearing 
    1 of 3 all on the same shaft   As hilly said use a baker and now all balls
    Make a wider bearing for the inner primary bearing  if it’s a clutch hub
    Or main shaft your going to need a press or pullers to remove bearings 
    And you won’t see much anless you’ve ridden over it big time failure 
    As The bearings are hidden till you strip her down  maybe some metal 
    In primary but there normally is any way  ,if it’s a clutch hub bearing you
    Will need to strip the clutch pack to change the hub bearing(press)
    If it’s main you need a bearing puller  , you will need to strip the whole primary 
    To have look , to remove inner primary cover  as you need to remove 
    Clutch hub, compensating sprocket, chain before inner cover can be removed

    Check with baker but don't think make IPB for 2012. They stopped at 2007 as hd's improved.

    Yep you’re right Roberts all balls don’t make a wider bearing for that year either 
    But do make a Oem replacement type kit for it

    thanks for all the info I have looked at some you tube posts as well as checking who makes IPB I did see All Balls made a Kit. Im off now to just take outer cover off for a look see any one know Torque specs for re tightening primary bolts ?

    My Deluxe had the same whirring sound Rod, process off elimination, and back on the road.

    mine is starting to make a bit of noise too and am not looking forward to replacing it but will persevere. 48kms so I guess its had a good run
    When in neutral it makes a whirring sound, pull in clutch and after a couple of seconds stops cause the transmission mainshaft stops spinning.

    Has anyone got tips on undoing the starter bolts on a Softail without removing the oil tank when removing inner primary?

    Thanks Robnicko thought it might be regarding your question I just this morning seen a clip on youtube by Law abiding biker I think, he personally thinks it too much hassle & takes oil tank off

    I have an FXR and they say to remove the oil tank as well.  I did that once and then swore never again as its a real PITA and only good if you want to also wash out the oil tank for whatever reason.

    I find that a ball joint allen key does actually fit if your working from the exhaust pipe side and is actually really easy to do.  Way easier to remove the rear pipe as well which gives better access.  And ALWAYS disconnect the battery as your messing with a starter motor and its bloody easy to trigger it.

    Check out a tool shop like total tools or something for a long Allen key

    Thanks guys, Im gonna have a look tonight at welding an Allen key to a long rod to reach through. I thing removing the inner rear guard plastic splash thing will give access as well.

    Ive seen that LABiker video too and yeah, oil tank looks like a real hassle to remove !
    Mine is only minor noise but I know I gotta do it before it gets worse

    mainshaft doesn’t stop spinning  it just when you pull clutch in the load transfers to the clutch hub/pack n bearing ,
    As Tussuck said you can get to the starter with ball hex head keys. 1/4 drive  battery out
    Loosen the the oil tank brackets or remove them  you don’t have to 
    Remove the whole starter anless you want to just pull it back a bit 
    have done it this way multiple Times  but it  is easier with the oil tank removed ,
    I’ve never taken inner guard off  and that’s a hassle to get to the bolts 
    With wheel on .
