So my 6 yr old daughter (7 in a month) has now had a few rides on the back of the hog. Her feet reach the foot pegs, the helmet fits, we do not exceed second gear, we stick to the blocks around the house, she thinks its the greatest thing ever, she has been asking to go for a ride since she was 4 something, and going for a ride has been HER request on all three occasions. Hypothetically. It's all hypothetical of course.
Her mother HATES it.
Her mother has valid reasons of course (the law, the safety aspect).
Anyone with any good arguments that I can add to my bow for carrying on with the weekly rides? Any similar experiences to report?
PS: the kid lives with me 70% of the time, so I'm not losing anything pissing off mum!

In my experience with split Parenting Kids see everything & will empathize with whoever the are with even if its just 30% of the time with mum. I think the saying still applies Happy EX - wife, happy life, we all know a lot of car drivers are oblivious to bikes, maybe that should be your consideration just my 2c

I use to take my son as little fella on my bike all the time, I found when they are young put the on the front of you.
Then they are held in by your arms get to see the road as a rider and its better to talk with them also.
Just my 2 bobs worth.

My youngest granddaughter used to climb onto the seat of my Triumph when she was two. About twice her height. No fear. She's six now and has been for rides around the yard.

I asked her if she wanted the Harley or the Triumph when I died. She said "Both." She'll get them both. A couple of years to go until she turns 8 but she's going to be seeing a lot of miles on the back when she does.

Both my kids used to come on the back of my bike regularly once they turned 8 (legal age in NSW), the daughter was a bit of a shorty and I did wait a bit longer before taking her so she could safely reach the footpegs. I have seen fucktards doubling kids in shorts and sneakers with legs just hanging over the seat!
A good backrest, suitable riding gear and take it easy. My young bloke was so relaxed on the back he used to stick his arms out like he was plane, couldn't work out why the bike was going all over the lane with no breeze :( had to educate him on that pretty quickly! Just had a nice ride last w/end with the daughter (now 13), but the Street Glide with topbox and backrest fitted is a damn site more comfy than the old Fatboy.
My missus used to ride before kids, so probably a lot easier in my case.

Can't offer any words of wisdom WRT to the ex sorry.

Not quite the same but my father used to be a military policeman back in the day and when I was born he bought mum and me home from the hospital in the side car of his service Harley. He used to take me for rides on the back of his Norton as this was the only means of transport we had privately. He would also take me on the back of his Harley when he was going to work and back at HQ sometimes. The army had a lot more relaxed view on OH&S in those days!!!

I had the same problem with the ex wife. My approach was, so long as the kids are wearing the right safety gear and they feel safe on the bike (ie I had a sissy bar on the back that gave them a LOT of comfort and safety) then I would take them on the bike. Of course the ex wife screamed and even threatened to call the cops on me for doing so - I told her to go f%$^k herself and to call the cops - she never did. Key is that YOU have top be comfortable that your kids a safe! Buy Kevlar jeans for them etc as I did.

100 % with ya Tussuck, long as they safe all cool, just regulate everything as to having a very importantant passenger.Took a nephew on back of bike long time ago, and caught him as he"s attempting to climb off the rear at 50kph. Scary. Front is good idea if unsure.
When I was 5/6 yo, old man would drop me off at my uncle Bob's for a few hours. FUK I loved that , he was a mechanic, had a new FC wagon, and a BSA A65 that i would sit on for hours, and had 303 rifles laid out on his bed for me to play with when he wasn"t there, he lived with a granny.. Gave me my first special rifle at 6. Can"t do that now or you be in jail....that"s where my love grew for Shooting and Motorcycling.

Legal Age in NSW is 8. As soon as my son hit that age I got him a helmet, leather jacket, kevlar jeans and gloves. He rode with me until he was about 16 which was fantastic. He used to plug in his ipod and I am sure he fell asleep some times but I had a sissy bar so he didn't fall off !! Our rides (pretty well every w/e) we probably some of the best times of him growing up.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I'll look into a sissy bar. I have an FXR with a LePera solo seat, so there is a padded area stretching over the rear fender, but I don't run a sissy bar.
Any tips on a sissy bar easy to put on and take off?!
She's got the basic safety gear at the moment but she's gonna grow out of jackets at a rate of knots!
The ex sent a nice text this morning saying she should not be so combative about it and we can discuss the issue. Having the ex be reasonable is about as rare as the hog running perfectly for 12 months straight.

G’day Darrin,
My young fella has been on the back now for the last 18 months or so and loves it.
I made sure he had some good gear and the best thing we use is the rider/pillion handles i; the pictures below.
The belt goes around me and he has handles to grab hold of. Made him feel a lot safer straight away and as he couldn’t get his arms around me he could hang on no worries. Loves going through the twisty stuff a lot more now, sometimes thinks he on a side car and wants to throw a knee out cause he can hang on.
About $45.00 on eBay.
Yeah get some strange looks when putting it on, people think it’s a kidney belt. But fk em, my little mates safer for it.

Bucky! You totally win the door prize for that suggestion. Much appreciated.
I found the Oxford Rider Grips for sale through Bikebiz in Sydney, so will order them. At $55 + $8 postage that's a no brainer. Much better than her putting her hands in my jacket pockets.
