It seems unlikely, given that only Harleys seem to have noisy brakes. Gave the brakes a workout today but still doing it, does seem to vary just a little with speed and pressure though, going to bevel the pads and try a little copper grease on the backs of the pads and see if there's any noticeable effect.

Its the sintered pads on the vented discs

    Quoting Smokey61 on 19 Nov 2018 11:22 AM

It's the same pads that have been there operating silently for the previous 4000 kms that I've owned it.

    Smokey,
My front brake makes a buzz when applying the brake, rear I dont know cause of the natural forward momentum cannot hear it + exhaust
You mentioned this happening after a major service. Is it possible they removed the pads, cleaned them with brake cleaner and removed the buildup of brake dust, especially that in the slot half way in the pad that allows the heat to escape and also is the wear indicator?
They possibly just need the brake dust to build up in them again. - think of sandpaper that fills with wood dust etc
Some say its the air trapped in the disc holes being forced out when entering the pads too which sounds feasiblel too, vented / slotted discs on cars are noisy compared to unvented / slotted & cross drilled
For what its worth my trailbike does the same and also mountain bike both of which get when cleaning the bikes is with Dobatex which is like a degreaser to a point and the brakes always make noise for a bit after but effectiveness is still there
just a thought & excuse to go for more rides !

Your first idea is where I'm at right now. Haven't had the chance to look at it yet, maybe tomorrow. A high frequency vibe could be the culprit, and I'll be looking at that, but I'm never going to wear the air in the disc holes theory. The physics just don't stack up and *no* other marque of car nor motorcycle suffers from this problem.

    I'll post my findings.

OK folks. Did a bit of a Google search across multiple HD sites. You are not alone in either brand bike or model Harley.
Here are some solutions people proposed and a video

It never fails to amaze me (easily amazed) how on forums when someone has a problem, rather than coming up with a solution, others chime in with their own exact same issue, for page after page as though describing it again or in a slightly different fashion will help.

Use an insolator between the caliper piston & the metal backing plate where the pad material is attached.
I took some 1/16'' gasket material & cut out a circle duplicating the piston. I took some spray adhesive & liberally sprayed the gasket material & attached it to the piston. I also laid a piece of 80 Grit sandpaper on the flat benchtop & scuffed the pads. Put the pads back in and the noise was no longer there. All your doing is providing a transitional break in the vibration which is going back to the M/Cylinder.

Put a fine coating of silicone grease on the back side of the pad. Problem solved.

I the leading brake pad edges aren't beveled, I believe THAT'S what causes the noise with the drilled rotors. It's not the calipers, rather the pads.

knocked the hard edges off the cross drill holes with a deburring tool and that took care of the buzzing sound. I dont think it helped or hurt performance, but the buzz bugged me so it had to go

Some other fellow thinks its a spring required between the pads (video)

Anyone *without* ABS have this noise from the front brake?

Yep, 2008 streetbob. 140000km, numerous brake pads, done it from new.

So perhaps we can deduce that its the pads......

I've beveled the leading edge of the pads and put a thin smear of grease on the back of the pads.

    No change.

I'll try different brake pads. I'll replace the whole fucking braking system if I have to.

There are no springs, only the ones in the brake pistons.

I think his problem is different to mine but at this stage I'll try anything.

    Pads next.

Told you pads at the start, the noise will still be there but depending on the brand the pitch of the noise changes
