It’s a bit more complicated than just 10%, from memory.. (I used to import guitars)
Item + 5% duty + shipping + 10% GST on total + clearing fee ($50?) + 2% credit card charge (you have to pay that as normally it’s the only way to pay).

I normally allow 20-25%, some parts are exempt from the duty depending on manufacture and item specifics.

So basically i'm better of buying here in Aus just means I'll have to wait longer for my parts?

Pretty well sums it up these days. Certainly used to be worthwhile shopping OS a few years ago but not now. You may still save a bit but I have certainly been stuffed around by customs before so I mainly just buy local now.

If you keep it below $1,000au total value of good's you get it in without tax. but goods with a value of $1,000 au or higher attract customs and the tax.
If you think you could bring in broken up into 5 separate packages and sent few weeks apart . work out cost of 5 time & less tax, that's if it is possible.
if not my recommendation is, go with one of the big company's like TNT or so on as they get it in quicker and do there own customs tax . if you do it normal post  it don't take long but your goods could be stuck in customs in Australia a few weeks and you need to know what codes to give them. basically they just want to tax , but stuff around a long time.
    well good luck with it.

Have you done the maths regarding the cost of local vs imported and if the real difference is the time factor.....well you make that call

    Do this

Not anymore you pay gst  on any amount from 1/7/18
Best you can do is get the invoice lowered to a lesser value

Yeah but you don’t pay import duty on goods under one thousand dollars iirc

Another thing is fitment. Don’t know how many parts I’ve bought from an HD dealer, specified for my bike only to find they don’t fit. Not much comeback when you’ve bought from overseas.

Yeh unfortunately now you do have to pay GST on parts under $1000. I just bought a Fuelpak from the states, after the exchange rate, shipping, GST etc, etc. I saved about $50 against buying it locally, probably wasn't worth it but I hadn't taken into consideration the GST when I ordered it. I buy most parts from the states, shops here are almost always more expensive, I'm hoping this government shutdown Trump is doing at the moment weakens the US dollar, then I'll really go on a shopping spree!

If waiting is the issue you'll probably have a wait from the states anyway. My last order made it from the US to Melbourne in 3 days then sat in customs for 2.5 weeks while they mailed me a letter asking me to clear the additional duties.
It also depends where the order comes from. I have had a few orders from Revzilla that have been well over a grand and haven't been pinged by customs.

I recently bought a piece for my air cleaner cover from the States for $82 AUD and was charged GST at checkout (point of sale)
GST was part of the $82AUD
