In my case it was a very loud growling whir, I cannot stress the loud bit enough, I would of run it as a drag bike but not as a road bike, my chain was good, crank was good, have not tried it on my current bike.

Was the source of the noise identified in the unit? was it a chain over material issue ? alignment? design fault? fouling somewhere? was there any material residue identified in the oil?

    Cheers.

Jeez Hoody I don't know for sure but it didn't make that racket with the original tensioner even though it was bent on the bottom and it didn't make a noise with the newer stock one I replaced it with, I put it down to chain on material and harmonics, oil was fine, the bike, 06 Dyna, did another 50k afterwards with no primary issues before I sold it.
The other bloke that used the SE unit put it in an 08 CVO Dyna, same deal, LAF. He modded his stock one like in the photo, think he was happy with that.

I have 2 new SE manual adjusters in my shed, been there since they were released. Same reasons as Hilly.

Can you please explain the tensioner mod in more detail GM.
I think I see what you have done in the pics, but not 100%.
Sounds like a good mod to do.

Finally took my primary cover off today to check out if the automatic tensioner has ratcheted up too tight.
Not really sure if it is or not?. There is nothing in the workshop manual that says how tight the standard automatic tensioners should make the chain.
So a couple of questions for those more experienced with this stuff.
I measured the movement midway between the sprockets and there was 8mm of movement before the tensioner shoe started moving downwards. By the time the shoe had bottomed out there was 16mm of movement in the chain.
Does this sound about right?. If the tensioner is working fine I'm happy to leave it.
Have never taken the primary cover off myself, although it has been off before. The fixing allen head fasteners were super tight and had obviously been locktited in. Was wondering if this is standard practice on the balanced motors?.
    Thank you in advance.

Bit late but the tensioner sounds right, I don't lock the primary bolts but I do torque them on my own bike, on others bikes they get a dab of blue.
