14" Apes

Over the last few day's I have put a set of 14" apes on my Road King...Every one has told me that the throttle by wire is a pain to extend and the ABS is a pain in the arse to bleed...Well the throttle by wire wiring is plenty long enough and didn't need to be extended but trying to get all the wiring and the throttle by wire wiring down the bars internally is a pain in the arse. With the standard bars the wiring for all the switch gear was external. Because I had to put a new top brake line on for the apes I was dreading the brake bleeding but as it turned out a simple syringe and a length of plastic hose is all that's needed and the new fluid is pushed up from the bleed nipple on the front wheel to the master cylinder and it works like a charm. This is all on a 2011 Road King so not sure if other models would be as easy...Bit of a ramble but just thought I would put it in here in case anyone else is considering doing the same.
    Cheers...

Gidday Sparra , good looking Apes you have there ... have a question if thats Ok and to anyone else that may check in as well ... what pull back are those bars ... Have a mate with a 98 Wide Glide and has always loved the look of Apes ... well he went with a set of 16 " Wild 1 Chubby`s i think the brand was which i think have 8 to 9 inch pull back ... has a Mustang solo Day Tripper seat and some lowering blocks on rear stock shocks .

The problem is that the Bars come way to far back towards his body when the Bars are in line with the forks when you look from the side if you know what i mean and is not real comfortable to ride like that and has to push Bars forward which he is not kean on ... there seems to be a current trend where guys push the Bars forward ... bit weird looking .

What dosent help is the fact that he has 3 " over forks with a 3 degree rake as well ... sorry for the ramble but are trying to find Some Traditional Apes with very little Pull Back that would solve the issue i reckon ... hence the long winded question as to how much pull back are your bars .

These are 14" Chubby's (I think) I have had these for a few years and had them on my Wideglide and when they were in line with the forks they were too far back for me but on here they are almost perfect when in line with the forks..The rake on the wide glide is heaps different to the Road King so that is the reason...Not too sure on the pull back but look heaps better on this bike than they did on the Wideglide..

Mate, I completely agree with you. If you read half of what's out there on the net you would never do it. But for my 16 slim it was easy, cables were long enough and piss easy to pull through the apes. Bleeding is the same for abs and non. For abs, as you said(which is what I also did) using a big enough syringe just push fluid back up to the reservoir.
I always pull the brake handle and secure it with velcro overnight to allow any air that might still be i the line to work it's way out just to be sure. Piss easy and if you have abs, don't switch the engine on until you've completely finished bleeding.

Thanks Sparra ... I think you are spot on about the difference in the Rake between wideglide and road king ... and my mate has made things even harder by having the extended forks plus the 3 degree rake .

I know there are a lot of these modern bars with the Straight / Sharp bends that don`t have any where near as much Pull Back as compared to Traditional Apes , but not sure how those Modern bars would look on a 99 Wide Glide ... we will keep on searching .

    Cheers .

Again, well done Sparra, good info for those going down that path. Kinda always like the apes had on a few of my old bikes, even when the coppers got out their tape measures, that was funny as they both tried to hold the dumb end.....
Apologies, dropping in on your thread; TJU  'what apes have you got on your Glide?'

No worries at all Baloffski ... wasnt sure if you meant the bars on my 17 Road Glide which are the 9" high 1.25" Harley Bars ... or the Bars on my mates 99 Wide Glide which are currently 16" Traditional style , i think Wild 1 Chubby`s ... but not totally sure ... pics below are what they look like on his bike ... but as mentioned with the 3 degree rake and

extended forks he has to push bars forward to be comfortable ... just trying to find a set of bars that have very little pull back ... when i saw Sparra`s i thought they might be worth a look but seem the same .

    Will continue the search .

Bars look good Sparra, I recently put a set of Wild1 WO592 hooked bars on my 17 SGS and know your pain in wiring them - it was fekken harder than an 18yr old at the strippers!
I did a fair bit of googling before tackling this job, all the vids said I only needed the control switch extensions - so got the NAMZ 8" extensions and bars from EasyR. I also have heated hand grips, so that was another pain on the left side, should have extended them before pulling as they are too short - oh well a job for another day ( and another beer) and yes you're right the TBW harness is plenty long enough but a bastard to pull thru with control wires and my style of bar. What nearly broke me right at the end was the notches for the TBW in the bars weren't big enough and I couldn't fit the throttle controller in - I was really pissed with myself, because as soon as I went to fit it I remembered reading about this issue - there was no way in hell I was attempting to remove the TBW harness and pull it again, so I backed it out enough to have the harness exposed and carefully tried filing the notches in the bars (without success) and finally ended up getting the Dremel out and trimming the plastic tabs on the TBW controller enough so it would engage in the notches. Didn't need new hydraulic lines, just a bit of relocation under the fairing.

Think they turned out pretty good and can (mostly) still use the standard mirrors.

    cheers

Hi Sparra ... They definitely are not the worst I have seen and not the best photo angle as side on you can really see how pushed forward they are ... Mind you a lot of people like that look of course , just my mate prefers the straight inline with the forks look ... And yeah he likes his garage looking clean ... Lol .
Doc what brand are your 8 inch bars ... I have the 9 inch Chiseled Harley Bars and would like to go even lower ... Yours look pretty good .

TJU, mine are Wild1 WO592 bars mate. They're 12" though as I wanted to use the standard mirrors and the 10" would have placed my hands directly in front of them.
