Damn it. I screwed up big tonight. Didn't check to see if I had enough hd tranmission formula before draining the thing. Ran out of fluid and the stupid thing needs topping up. I need the bike to get to work tomorrow. do you reckon I could top it off with normal harley motor oil till I get to the dealer tomorrow or am I risking damage? It's about half full of trans formula. Any input appreciated

So you've already disposed of what you drained?

Yeah I have a large oil pan which I top all the fluids into. What's been drained is now mixed with used engine oil

My advice is get a lift, Uber, bus or a train to work. Buy some trans fluid on way home.

I may just have to take that advice wideglider. Damn I buy the shit in bulk so never ran out before. Had the exact same bottle sitting beside it so thought I'd be fine but that was a bottle of lawn mower oil haha. The lesson is always double check before draining fluids

Yeah, we all live & learn!
You'll have piece of mind knowing you're not risking any undue wear, plus you won't have to drain trans again.

130K trouble free well done - any advice for the rest of us on how to look after your bike.

105k on the Sporty too.  Secret is in replacing the oil and filter every 5,000k for me (with harley oil - BUT that's just personal preference). And ride the pants off it.

Yeah she's going strong. I started using the 3 fluid replacement every 8k as specified when I bought the bike with harley fluids only. Now that she's getting up there i do every 5k for oil and filter and 8k for trans and primary. Everything else as needed. I don't baby the bike, I ride it like I stole it. Plus she never sits around. I ride it every day as primary transport. The best advice I can give is buy a service manual and make sure maintenance is up to date. Forks, bearings, lubing all pivots, brakes, tensioner inspections....etc. Plus when you do a majority of the work yourself you know exactly where the bike is at. Helps avoid nasty surprised on the road. Unless you don't check your stock before draining the fluids like I did lol. Definitely no complaints from me about Harleys

A heap of people run 20w50 engine oil in their transmission and swear by it.  I stick with trans oil myself.

Agree... Engine oil in the tranny!  Should be using ATF!

Gee using 20w50 synthetic in all 3 holes would make my oil changes easier.  Actually, I think my old jap sports bike had engine oil in the tranny. I’m sure of it

I actually think they do say you can use the new synthetic oils in all three holes.  I just know that the working environment between an engine and a transmission are different so use a specialist oil in each hole rather than what I considered the 'generalist' synth oil.

If your motor oil is HD SYN 3 then yes you can use that in the transmission......it’s what my dealer puts in routinely. 3 stands for all 3 holes......
