Thanks Loopie. Just in case there is a concern the bike was not new. I've added a photo taken by dealer to my post name . Happier times. Day 1 of purchase at dealer.

Left field question.....what product do you wash it with?

My question - how regularly do you wash it?

Well good luck with getting some help from dealer, after all the bike should still be under warranty.
Such an unlucky thing to happen.
It does make you wonder why the original purchaser got rid of the bike so quickly?.

Quoting paulybronco on 18 Jul 2019 03:39 AM

He did say he bought it new

Did he?, I thought he changed his mind and said he did not.
But now it seems he actually did.
With any luck the rust wont even be there in the morning and it was all a bad dream.
If perchance the rust is still there in the morning and it were my new bike, I'd be giving the dealer hell.

Ignore. This thread moving quicker than one finger typing.
    Good luck Scuzzy.
My brand new bike had to have the crankcases split and re-assembled. All under warranty, 10 years ago. Still own it and love it. If you need a bit of encouragement.

Thanks guys. Wish it was a bad dream .
As to washing it, the bikes wiped down after every ride with luke warm water then  dried.
    Followed HD advice on cleaning.
Pragmatically, as Fair Trading advised , it is sold for Australian markets, and should not rust within that time at all. According to Fair Trading any suggestions that rust within a short time   is due to poor cleaning is "mischevious" by the dealer. As they suggested, a car with chrome rusting within warranty is covered without questions.
I ll let you know how it goes with the dealer.

Are there any cars that have chrome anymore....

Jesus.. I live 15 min walk from the beach, I rarely wash it.. fck I’ve got a small amount of rust on my spoke nipples but nothing like that. AND I’ve done a ton of long distance heavy weather riding.

Thanks Mr Mow. That's my thoughts too. New bikes  should not rust like that.

Mate, you of all people do not need to be reminded that  something is definitely NQR ( Not Quite Right)obviously.
I'm absolutely no help whatso ever, except to mention, someone in stitching you up, or bike was subjected to sodium Chloride on the road somehow, to neutralise black ice, except I think you live in the tropics? derrr. Sorry man.
Maybe on the way over the bike slipped outta its container for a smoke in rough weather?

Thanks Balofski. Yep, NNSW. No ice here. I've spared you all the multiple emails from the dealer suggesting it s my care. Wonder if they are suggesting I should be cleaning EVERY  spoke , nut , piece  of chrome etc after ever ride  (and it s only  been ridden about 20 times in 10 months as I' m a FIFO).  Then during  the time when it is not ridden, and I' m away for a month, do they suggest  I ask a mate to clean it.
If the dealer had  said , like you suggested , something's not right,  they will get onto it , it would have been helpful. Sadly no.
Currently, before I'm giving them the bike, I' ve asked for a turn around time of 7 days from their pick up and assurance that it is their warranty (they have told me in an email that the warranty is with Harley- not them which is yet more BS ). Don't want to be without a w/e ride with mates whilst it sits somewhere for weeks .
Thanks again for everyone s helpful thoughts.

    Hi Scuzz
Had the same problem on my16 sporty custom. tried harley to no avail.went to fair trading and lost again.
The bastards have a get out of jail free paragraph hidden in the warranty somewhere.
They sell the product as top of the line when really its the same old piece if rusty shit they have been making for years.

Scuzz I hope you have a win, I truely do.
You will need to go to the top though as the warranty is HD AU not the dealer, a bloke I know had the HD dealership in Kalgoorlie for a few years, good bloke, handed out warranty fixes as they came in and then hit HD up for compensation, they weaseled out of one too many and he chucked it in.
Couple of contacts here I saved from a previous post, don't know if they are still correct but might help when it gets sticky.

Good luck bro, keep us posted, I have a feeling they will say it was put away wet or the like though, they are tricky.

Thanks loopie, pedro 123  and grease monkey. Have not had a response since I asked for a fixed  turn  around time (after one of the forum members said he had to wait 5 weeks to get his bike back  and that that  dealer would not give him info on what was going on). I understand the dealer would have to take time, I just worry my bike may sit there for a while without anything happening. I only get to ride it once every three to four weeks . I' d go through withdrawls if the dealer had it for weeks as well.
My wife thinks I'm mad .  I get a rush from rumble from the pipes and the air filter sucking it in.

I got nothing but a flick pass from Nigel onto Adam, who i had to contact i might add after being told that my details would be passed on.  Adam gave me the same old company lines so i just gave up realising nothing would happen.

Thanks for the pictures mate now we can see what your up against, it don't look good at all and I wish you luck
in the warranty claim and it looks like you indeed have a claim but guessing HD will baulk at it.

Thanks Mickle. I find it  hard to fathom how it can happen within 3 months of purchase. One mate thinks it was on a containership and somehow got wet . Another said poor quality chroming / plating. I' m for the latter.
    Does any body know:
    - how these bikes arrive  ( I assumed they would each be bubble wrapped and braced in wood pallets and then delivered to dealers from a central Australian wharehouse).
    - whether the various parts are chromed in different places  ( the headlight cowl has zero rust . Everything else has rust )
    - if these parts are rusting,  are there certain electrical wires/ plugs I should check that are rust problems
    - does anybody have a mate with a 2018  street Bob  (I 'm checking through my local HOG club)

Only HD know the answer to this, how many other bikes of that batch have the same problem? if there are
numerous other claims you are in with a chance, if you are the only claim out of a possible (guessing here)
10,000 built that points at you neglecting the bike and only you know the answer to that.

That really is poor on a new bike Scuzz, here's hoping you have some luck with HD.

Not that hard to rectify for them but we know how manufactures love to wiggle there way out of a claim.

Looks like they're now dipping the bikes in the ocean before shipping.

    Thanks guys.
And Mickle, I  can assure you it  has not been neglected. Bike  Sat in an enclosed  shed. Only done 3800 km. Wiped down after ever ride. Serviced by dealer. Rust started within   4 months. I'm 56 y old and value my bike. Not sure what sort of neglect can cause this given seat s in good nick , never been dropped, electrics all work and Certain bits of chrome not rusting . Given the posts, it looks like others have rust problems early too, with Pedro 123 having a similar issue on his 2016 sportster. I suspect mine is one of the, if not the most extreme of rust problems.
My site image is me on day of purchase au 2018  with  face etc blacked out. Happy as Larry. I Still want my bike. Just want bike in  the type of condition an 11 month old bike with only 3800 km travelled should be in.
I'll let people know how Harley explain it to me.

My 16 slim came with factory rust on the nacelle and developed pitting on nearly all alloy bits. I live near the beach but it's garaged always and never in the weather. Later I'll get the spokes done as the chrome is so shit just looking at it will make it rust.
Harley's are pretty shit quality for the money they ask but it is what it is. I just had the parts power coated and replaced what I wanted chrome anyway. Hope you get yours sorted because they aren't cheap bikes just poor quality controlled.
