Can anyone give me an idea of the road condition from Emerald to Charters Towers. Am trying to decide on a route from Brissy to Cairns in a couple of weeks. Do you know if it was effected by the floods recently, shitloads of trucks, not much worth seeing.
    Thanks in advance

It will be better than the coast highway Benno:)
Just make sure you fill up at the Claremont Roadhouse and top up at the Belyando Road house as that is the only fuel between Clearmont and Charters Towers.
Don't ride through there at night or even very late arvo.

Catch you when you get up to Cairns.
    Cheers

Thanks Ken, am being warned off that route by multiple sources, mainly due to road works from the floods. Will drop you a message when I get into town, you still going to NZ.

No we went early and I got back 2 days before heading over here for work. The wife may go over next school holidays, but I will  be here again by then.
There is a web site for roadworks, which has been mentioned which sort of is helpfull. Was a bit going on between Townsville and Cairns last time I went through.

I would have thought the bulk of the roadworks would have been between Charters Towers and Townsville as that road went under. Not sure about the one to Emerald, but I would still go that way even with some roadworks rather than the coast rd, as there is bound to be some there too, and that way is very busy with trucks and campervans etc.

Travelled from western Victoria up the Kidman Way to Roma , Emerald then to Charters Towers and then across to Townsville and up to Port Douglas . This was late May 2019 . Road was ok , nothing too bad , agree with comments by Ken in Cairns  re fuel .
Been slowly travelling back down the coast from Port Douglas, now in Yamba NSW.  Bruce Hwy is very busy,  full of roadworks north and south of Brisbane . Very frustrating riding. Going inland soon , looking for better roads and riding.

Cheers GB, appreciate your feedback, now intend to leave Brisbane following the Burnett hwy, swing west to Emerald, through to Charters Towers, then up to Cairns along the coast.
Return down the coast until Rockhampton, swing west down through Springsure, Injune, Roma
Hope your trip goes safe, cheers

After Gee Bee gave me the low down on the Emerald to Charters Towers road, I took the plunge. glad I did, have been on much worse Qld roads. Met this guy and his wife at. Belleyando Crossing which is the only fuel between Clermont and Charters Towers. Ole mate was heading to Cooktown from Saffastarya to celebrate his 60th, someone hear might even know him. Check out the dog on top of the trailer in the cage, he’s got a piece of polycarbonate sheeting for a windscreen and roof. Also note the 2 gallon water container in the cage, ole mate told me it’s full of home brew scotch, he reckons if you wanna try and steal his shine outta there, good luck to ya.
Been on the road for around 3 weeks, staying at country pubs, met some great characters, get out there you blokes, your a long time dead.

What sort of bag is that on the back seat?

G’day Smokey, it’s a “Bikers Friend” barrel bag, it’s a great bag, comes with a couple of back supports too. They are a US based company, check out the website, having it strapped there stops me from slouching, well while I’m riding anyway.

Did this road today - all up a pretty good surface by outback standards.
A lot of nothing between Clermont and Charters Towers.
