20 K was heaps then. Prolly enough to buy 3 new Harley's at the time.
Not bad for 30 days work.
Makes you wonder if pommy guy had to pay 20 grand if he failed?.
It was a bet after all.

Just found article on the internet (so it must be true) that says in 1972 a Sportster 1000cc cost $2,136.
Don't know how much the big bore ones were. Do remember in 81 that it was about 8 grand AUD for a big bore one. Knew it was gunner be a long time before I owned one on 2nd year apprentice wage of about $100 per week.

For less than 3K = Sportster
Guy I knew in 1980, bought a new Harley - non Sporty for less than 10K. Can't remember the model.
Guess it's all relative, at the moment in time. Even scooting along the tar , or path where they may be preparing to lay a road, at the time 10,000 kilometers on the roads then, would have been a challenge. The bike a Honda 750/4 would have been the choice motorcycle, a stable platform, before the Z 900.
As you said FC wonder if he didn't make it?

A guy I know road a 750/4 around Aussie same route as that, but he went the other way (  clock wise ). he did it when he got back from National service in Vietnam. did it on his own with a shot gun & swag , cost him $100 for fuel.
I just looked this up, & it is a claim that it was the first motorcycle to ride around Australia. that is not true!! Harley Davidson was the first motor cycle to be ridden around Australia .
