I'm 6'2, ride an 883 Sporty every day and find it great.  So whats your criteria?
    - Will you be bar hopping or longer open road trips (rigid style vs. comfort ride)
    - Will there be a pillion? (my missus will not let leave the property on the FXR without her on the back.  Its pretty cool as we just go out somewhere relaxing for the day or whatever)
    - Are you a petrol head?
    - Are you mechanically inclined ie can you work on your bike yourself?  (oil changes etc or comfortable doing cam changes etc)

I would suggest models etc but I'm a bit black and white wrt whats a nice harley and whats chit etc.

    Welcome mate.
Heaps of good cheap units out there, so take your time.
I knew what I wanted which helped me with looking.
I went for a Dyna over a Softail.
    Good luck.

Welcome to the forum man, the only real way to answer your question is to haunt the dealers and test ride as many as you feel fit you in the showroom.
i.e. if you don't like how it feels in the showroom it's probably not for you.
One day you'll find a bike that just fits you perfectly, that's the one to buy.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy all the test riding. For me it was easy as I knew what I wanted before I walked into the shop.

    Welcome to the forum.
This is very sound advice - Heaps of good cheap units out there, so take your time.

The only other thing is to do as many test rides across the range (Tourer, Softail, Dyna etc) as possible - head up to Gold Coast Harley and try out whatever they have - and as above don't rush in as there are plenty of deals out there!!. Also as previously mentioned you need to decide what type of riding you want to do - long trips / small trips, passenger / no passenger as that certainly has an impact on which way you go.

    sound advice

go out and buy one of each, then there is no guessing,

its like getting dressed, on the hot days, you will wear your shorts and a singlet, on the cold day, jeans and a jacket

    tourer for the long rides
sporty for the zip through the twisties
    softail for the leisurely cruise
VAGdyna for the cruise with the missus

    the hard decision is colour
