When I removed mine to replace the main seal (interesting how they install the seal in backwards) it appeared that the nut was installed using loctite or similar. Is it a requirement to install the nut with loctite or is it OK natural? The bike is a Fatboy 1998 Evo 883

Your workshop manual should specify whether a thread-locking compound is required & if so, what strength.
You say it was evident on the threads, why not just apply some again?

Unfortunately I have mislaid my workshop manual, so have resorted to what information others may have at their disposal, I'm not convinced that there was a thread locking material applied it could have been a buildup of baked on muck. This bike has had some mysterious work done on it and not all good, so as time permits I've been working my way through to get it sorted, almost done. I've assembled it without any 'loctite' thread material and am concerned in retrospect, if it is required I'll pull it down again.
Is it common for the crankseal to fail, I drained almost 8 litres of oil out of the primary, it hasn't been touched for about 6 years, just sitting.

I  had to change mine at 115K Started pumping oil into the the primary.  so yep they wear harden, with a softail a pain to change.

Found getting the oil seal out the easy part just screw in a couple of roofing TEK screws (make sure they only just go through otherwise they will hit the bearing) but the seal in backwards got me, apparently that's how they install them in the factory. And after all that,  I found my bloody workshop manual once the job was done - so typical.

Yes loctite it  and torque to spec otherwise the compensating nut can deform  from stretch
You need to torque it once you have it back together with the clutch and compensater
And chain on  and jam  it so it can’t turn over

    Fatboy Evo 883 ?

8 litres of oil in the primary ?

Am I the only one to smell something fishy here ?

On a Fatboy of ANY age 8 litres will not fit in the primary

And "883" is and has always been a Sportster specific terminology
