I am rebuilding my 1979 flh shovel 75 barrels worked pistons and head running a joe hunt magneto and have a choice of the original 80s carburettor or a Weber carburettor 40 DC0E HD manifold
Also have a Phase 2 system but have heard you can have trouble fitting it to a 79 FLH
Any thoughts or issues with using the Webber  or phase 2 would be appreciated

    Hi Wombat
Hopefully others with more recent experience will reply.
I fitted a 40 Webber to my Sporty in 1975. Used one of those bent alloy manifolds that pushed the carby forward. I added Webber Venturi inserts, I think they were 30mm because it just wouldn’t run at 40.
After much tuning I could get it to idle and also run at full throttle but not much in between so cruising round town was difficult. We never worked out what the problem was so I removed it after a few weeks.
If I was doing it today and it didn’t work, I’d look at fitting a 12 volt fuel pump as these days you can buy very small units with variable speeds/pressures from most speed shops.

Like RatBob said, not much advantage from the Weber. they are an individual runner, so one side for one cylinder, other side for other cylinder, & this can cause stand off.
with a Harley much easier to run a single carb going to the two cylinders. if you could, I would say a cv40 would be perfect if you ride the bike a lot. the old stock carb they came with won't work as well as the CV40, if both in perfect tune CV40 will run away & a set and forget carb. but if your not going to ride it much, what ever you want.
    & good luck with it.

Yeah mate I thinks that's the best, if you have the manifold it's a simple fit, the fun's in the tuning.
Would like to know how it worked out for you.
