(Admin - feel free to move - I placed it in general to hopefully get a wide member sweep.)
Folks - Help Please - I am in total panic mode - do any of you use a softail oil tank plug like the one in the pic.  I purchased it via Ebay for my old 90's Heritage. Yesterday on start up the chrome cap shot off leaving the rubber bung in place. What I need to know is if you have one does yours appear to have the chrome cap glued on to the rubber bung or looking up through the centre of the rubber bung, is there a screw securing the chrome cap to the bung?.
There certainly is a provision for a metal thread screw. If its just cheaply glued with no screw, I am fine. If its held together by a screw I am buggered as this means the screw will be in my oil tank. I had shut the engine down immediately and am too scared to start it again as I would really prefer to avoid potential catastrophic engine damage.
If you use one of these or have one laying about can you please have a look and give me the good or bad news.
    Thanks one and all.

Oileak, I've been riding Harly's since the late 70's & they have all used that style cap, but all mine have had a dip stick built in, to measure oil level.i have never had any problems.
if worried drain your oil into a clean dry container, get a flexible magnet run it around in the tank see if it picks anything up. run magnet around the oil you drained out. then refill the tank.

even with the oil in tank a flex magnet will pick up ,as long as what ever is there to pick up, [screws, washers ?]is not stainless.with out a dipstick how is the oil level measured?good luck with the search.

The oil tank pipes normally stick up an inch or so in the tank itself.  This is so chit and crap collects on the floor of the tank and does not get drawn into the oil system and pump etc.  As mentioned use a magnet to see if anything is there, but if it was me I would be draining the oil, removing the tank and giving it a full flush with kero or the like - just so I can sleep well at night.
There should be a long steel dipstick attached to that cap, so where is that?

Hi all.  The plug in the pic is an aftermarket 'plug/cap' only. My (then near new but used) bike never came with its stock factory dipstick. I dont have an original one. I have never used a dipstick and fill my level bike to just below the base of fill pipe if this makes sense. This places the oil just about perfectly where it would be if dip stick tested. Has worked fine for 24 years. Visual is easy and clean.
The plug in the pic 'looks' like the top of a stock dipstick but is just an aftermarket plug only. They come with no dipstick - just what you see - the rubber bung with a chrome cap.
If someone out there has one the same can you pls let me know how your chrome cap appears to be secured to the bung. I really dont want to have to remove the oil tank.
I really want also to go for the ride I had to cancel.

I get yah.  The issue I see is that if its a generic eBay plug and cover, while different types and brands may all 'look' the same they could in turn use way different mounting methods like you said - glue or a screw etc.  I see where your comign from; just because there is a thread there does not actually mean it was used per-sec, but you may have no choice and have to just assume worst case.
Stop off at the auto store and get a good engine magnet and have a go (assumes a magnetic screw and not brass etc).  If that little voice in your head is saying 'you really know you should pull the tank and flush' ... lol

Also thought I'd say, I hope when you do a service and change oil you make sure the motor warm and drain the tank soon after riding, as if you just top up tank to just below the top. you might find the crank case has oil laying in it. & when you start motor oil pump brings the extra oil from crank up to oil tank, you could have trouble. just mentioning as can happen.

Thanks mate, never been a hassle in a coupla decades. I am also a touch anal and change the oil and filter every 3000klms.
Now if I could find out about the bloody plug and screw issue....I cant sleep - voices are in bed with me.

Anyone out there got a plug like it that you can check out for me?

Ask the supplier what materials are in the plug.
If they can't tell you - order another plug and inspect it.

Advise taken - I just ordered another and will see that holds it together.
In the mean time of one of you out there has one of this style bung/cap can you pls have a look and put me and my HD out of our collective misery.

One lousy 'O' ring brought down a space shuttle.  One 'maybe' small bung screw has put my bike on life support till I get an answer.................................
