While we're on the subject, what's this (not the fucking bottle)
The gadget is very well made and seems to contain mercury which flows down into the shaft when upended.

Looks like a mercury vapour lamp to me!!!Current passes through the vapour , turns it to a gas which then emits light.

Interesting notion dicko, didn’t think of that but there’s no power input, it’s just a hollow handle.
I assume you’d need a fair bit of juice to vaporise Mercury?

No power input BB, the handle as you see it is smooth all round like a cigar tube, and doesn’t unscrew, no holes for wires etc.
I’m thinking it’s not a compass as there’s nothing magnetic to it, it’s all alloy, stainless steel, glass rubber and the mercury. It’s weird but must have a use. It was picked up at a swap meet, buggered if I can work out what it’s for, seller had no idea either.

Awesome Owls....  We have a family of them here in Belgrave.  You will see them sitting a tree branch even during the day, BLOODY hard to spot though.

    Tawny frogmouth owl?

It's a Tawny Frogmouth, not an Owl. Two completely different birds.

How about this one? It is made from brass. Pictured next to a pen to give idea of its size.

It opens up to a hollow tube with an angled mirror in one end.

I reckon that might be some sort of prehistoric telescope.
The chain part of it would be to clip on to your belt.
Thats my theory and Im sticking to it.

    Well, that was too easy.
Yes Steelo you guessed right, gold star for you.  It was issued with Lee Enfield 303's during the war as part of the cleaning kit. I think you put the device in where the bullets usually go in so that you can see down the bore to make sure it is clean.

Must be a skinny fukin pen.
The Lee Enfield  303 is  three hundred and three  thousandth  of an inch.
If that gadget  is a borescope it might work  on a tank .
I remember the  Lee Enfield  rifle  well. There was a small compartment  in the stock but I never saw one of those gadgets  in there..
