    Hi
I bought a new Derby cover for 2016 Dyna Wide Glide, but I didn't buy the o-ring gasket.

    Just asking
    1. Can I reuse the existing o-ring gasket? Take it off the current Derby and fit into the new one?
    2. I bought a round gasket, can I use that instead?

    thx

You can do anything, but first make sure it will fit & there is no damage. Then just hope you can remove from old one without damaging .

Does anyone know why there are the different gaskets. the one from the factory is the o-ring and ones there after you but from the Harley Dealer are paper composite kind. Makes sense to reuse the rubber one if possible.
Good luck micathia, I too wasnt aware there were two the first time I took it off.

    Regards

I have a 2013 Softail fxst with o-ring type gasket , I have taken my derby cover off a few times and have reused the same o-ring  ... I can't see why you couldn't reuse the o-ring from the old cover.. I'd be checking for damage and make sure it's clean before putting on new cover

The gasget type depends on the cover.
My 2014 has a paper gasget and my 2010 has a rubber one.

I've reused both before. The good thing is it remains high and dry(ish) behind the derby cover so you can re-use the gasget you have and swap it out when you have a replacement at a later date.

So paper one can be used on rubber cover and vice versa? No?

Don't know. This Milwaukee 8 still uses o-ring.

My 2005 Roadking had the Derby Cover "O" ring from new, I reused it many times without an issue

My 84 Shovel uses the ones that are just like a big o-ring. HD says superseded but just bought a 10 pack from Easyr for bugger all.
Find out what the original part number is for your particular o-ring and use that number on easyr's search bit.
If you are going to keep maintaining your bike, no point paying top dollar for the gaskets from the stealers when you can get em dirt cheap elsewhere.

    Ok..thx for all input.
I also did some research it seems o-ring or disc gasket, they are interchangeable.

But my problem (now I understand) is......I bought a Twincam Softail derby lol..... Will that fit on my Dyna? The one I bought looks the same size as the one on my bike.

No cant use either gasget on either cover style - the shape of the inner face of the cover dictates what type of gasget to use.
But a twin cam cover is a twin cam cover - the covers will fit across models (dyna, softail etc)
