Upgrade to the 2020 Breakout?

I currently have a 2014 Breakout, but I'm seriously considering whether I should upgrade to the 2020 Breakout or start to seriously customise the bike I have.

There's a lot of upgrades on the 2020 that I quite like, but more than that, I'm finding it hard to get a decent range of parts for the 2014 when compared to the stuff available for later model Softails.

I've uploaded my 2014, a photo I was able to take thanks to an empty carpark due to Corona quarantine, and a 2020 Breakout that has been customised by the folks at Burleigh Bars.

Has anyone made the upgrade to a 2020 Breakout yet? Any regrets?

Hm, UPGRADE is an interesting word, not sure I’d use it here.
Change for sure, test ride and let your ass decide.

Yeah, I see where I went wrong with suggesting it was an upgrade..

interesting call, upgrading to the next model! Have a 2017 FXSB, only difference between yours and mine apart from the wheels. is throttle by wire and the coil being re-located! I've ridden the later model a few times whilst mine was being serviced, nice bike but cant say I'm a fan! The ride heights better, so you can lean more and they have a bit more poke than the stock 103, but I still prefer mine! Lot's of fun to be had with the FXSB Model, plenty of aftermarket stuff available! Choice is yours, I'd suggest take one for a ride!! I do a lot of long rides on mine [currently 60,000k's], my next bike I'm thinking is a Road Glide...but I'd still keep the Breakout...just love the look! Best of luck with your decision!

I think I am leaning towards keeping my 2013 Breakout. I've got big plans for it, both cosmetic and for the engine.. two of the biggest cosmetic changes will be blackening it out and putting a springer front end on it.

If you’re just after looks ok but if you’re into riding, test ride a 2009 CVO Springer (it also has a 240 rear) and don’t handle real well but keep in mind that with its 32 degrees rake (designed for a Springer as they need a steeper angle to work) it’ll handle better than adding a Springer to your Breakout with its 36 degree rake.

You've given me more to think about!!

What I'm working towards is an everyday rider that looks like it could be a show bike. I've always loved the look of springer forks. How bad are we talking when you say that springer forks on a Breakout wouldn't handle too well?

Would the rake on a Fat Boy (30° rake on 2020 model) be better suited for springer forks?

Whichever bike I go with, I need a bike to suit my size. I'm 6'6" and want something that looks like it suits my size

Hi mate, well that bike sure has a steam punk look to it and a nice short Springer front end. But to answer your question yeah a 30 degree rake is better.
As for the picture not sure what brand it is but many have a negative rake to assist handling. Does look good.
I don’t know the bike but first glance suggests a shorter Springer running a large diameter front wheel and no guard, (perhaps no room) it looks balanced but clearly needs a shock between the springs.
Have you run a search on the Forum for Springer Conversion, I was considering it a while back but the feedback put me off.

This is just my two cents worth but I ride a cross bones and a large rear Tyre doesn’t help a springer. Mine came with a 200 rear and a 130 front. Now I rum a 180 and a 120 on the same rims... pirellis. FWD controls for better ground clearance and I can carve up the twisters with the best of them. The SE 110 helps. If you go old school springer you have to go old school Tyre sizes that they were built to use.

Yeah this is the kind of good oil I'm after. I mean, it makes sense when someone adds the context to it all.

Agree with Liam. I have never had any of my Harley's handle well with a 200 or plus size rear tyre. Had a Vrod Night Rod 2007 model. Went from a std 180 to a 200 - looked better (personal opinion) but no way did it corner like the 180. Ended going back to the 180.
My Springer has the 240 rear (FXSTSSE3) standard and while it is ok in a corner you have to put a lot of effort in to push it around.

Spend the money on a 110kit, 89cc heads, 58mm manifold & TB + pushrods, ignition coil, cam & tune. Id also recommend upgrading the front rotor to an over size arlen ness job. Or fit a trask turbo
Cosmeticly the factory turbine wheels can be picked up new for around $1300 each
IMO keep the chrome. Blacked out HDs everybodys doing it.

Google vicla breakout if you want to see something next level

I've been a fan of custom Vicla's for some time and I'd never thought to custom a Breakout like that. They look bloody awesome!!

I've been consider whether I should add a turbo or supercharger. Regardless if the direction I take the customisation, I want my bike to have some soul and character, and not be some Cookie-Cutter build.
