Been a bit deflated with the performance of my centre punch and want to get something that is good quality.
Looking online I see there are ones you do not even need to hit with a hammer!. Not sure I need one that fancy....or not.
So, who has got an excellent centre punch recommendation?

HAd one of them for 30 years, little rippers to use.  Get a top brand one though - none of that chineese chit.

Jeez FC, embrace the newer technology.
I guess some blokes want to use their hammer at every opportunity!

This question is a bit spooky  FC.
I recently made myself a center punch out of a  miners pick type of thing.
It was a little bit heavy so I  put it in the lathe and took some metal off the body of it but I left the hard as fuck tip .
I sharpened the tip with the soft green grinding wheel ( took ages)  but by the time the wheel disappeared I had this big fuck off center punch.
It was a fukin beautiful thing to smash with a 2  1/2 lb   ball peen hammer.
I used it a few times and all was good.  Then I had to use it on a 10mm cheese head screw and it broke.
I am in the same boat as you mate.  A decent center pop  would be good

The middle - top section of the barrel can be turned to adjust the pressure of the impact (basically it just loads/unloads the internal spring).
Its handy if your doing soft materials as the hardest setting can punch a hole through some materials

I got the best one I could find at Bunnings. Not particularly happy with it but at least the steel it is made from seems to be quite hard. Still on the lookout for a better one.

I ended up buying one from a local tool shop. Same as you  FC, not totally happy with it  ( not big enough ) but  not too bad.  Made in Germany.   $18.

Yeah the one I got was pretty pissy really. It was not made in China for one, so I was happy with that.
What I did not like about it was the blunt angle on the business/pointy end. It made it hard to see the exact spot where the point is before you hit with a hammer, without craning your neck and then viewing from an ambiguous angle.
I guess I should grind a steeper angle on it and see what gives.
