    Interesting Topics...Helmets

Back in the day of an avid Jap Slapper the only helmet was a Snell2 rated Arai or Shoei!

Big coin, buts that's all they would let you race with!

How times, prices and standards have changed!

Purchased my Harley new [2017]and they threw in an open faced helmet, Aus. standards yes but very low rating [brand not recorded on Snell scale].

Decided to up grade [full face] for night time to a Shoei some $800...and the standards base is EU [European Union]...which is now legal in Oz providing you remove your helmet and produce the internal sticker!!??

My point being, once upon a time you new what a good helmet was.....now with all the imports I'm not so sure!
Should have kept the old Arai but was out of date!

Look up helmet testing...thats a story in itself

I cant see why one would want to skimp on a helemet. How much is your head and brain worth? I think if you pay $70 for a helemet, just put an ice cream container on ya scone. thats my opinion

Love it when a 9 year old thread gets resurrected by a newby and everyone jumps on board. Keep up the good work though.

Needed to change my old lid over, way out of date and it stank (gloves too), you forget about theses things when you get back on a bike after a spell off. Half the brands in the shop I hadn't heard of, tried for an hour to make the helmets I was interested in fit (against the odds) and gave up in the end and bought one that actually fitted and felt comfortable rather than vanity fit. Two brands in the race, Shark and the other an Airoh, I dont recall either of those brands last time I went in to buy a helmet, anyhow bought the Airoh good safety rating, can go sort of open face, absolutely brilliant field of view and most important it is comfortable.... down side, looks wanky and they are pricey (although old mate took $80 off). Bought a pair of super comfortable Rjay gloves as well.

On the way out I saw a couple of discounted Mesh jackets so I tried one on, had armour on the elbows and shoulders and again felt comfy to wear so went back to the counter paid for it and realised it was a Dainese, what a steal! So in the end dropped a little over $700 but for safety sake it was worth it, good reminder though, buying a bike is one thing but I forgot to calculate in the price of new accessories and they ain't cheap...

Hey bungle, reackon your an old prick as myself. Never heard of airoh or is that "There ya go" .
But in all honesty, I bought a new helmet last year, never heard of most of them, like I have 5 helmets now, but is comfortable safe and bloody quiet, looks, ahh ok, sorta, but who gives a fuck, when ya sliding on tar.  Mesh jacket  is cool for when too bloody hot, as fucken stinky sweaty, too old for.
Good onyou for letting us know.

gents FWIW, I went ahead and ordered a Shoei helmet for the bride thru Chromeburner in the Netherlands, ordered on the 7th May and received  the helmet on the 15th May.
Paid thru PayPal, and $180 cheaper than anywhere I could find in Australia.

just read the first page and this page so don't know if this has been mentioned.
who gives a fuck what it looks like. I  spent an hour trying on different helmets and deliberately didn't look at the brand name or price but concentrated on comfort.
I did succumb to the open face theory but cos it was my first Harley  I thought I should conform.
I ended up with a THH with a flip up visor. Turned out it was one of the cheapest lids in the shop but it fits my head like a glove.
When I got home I put it on the nogging and checked it out in the mirror. The word bubblehead sprang to mind.
As I said before,  who gives a fuck?

Yeah BB, I once had a helmet some mockingly commented looked like a bowling ball, but to me it was one of the most comfortable I've ever had.
I also knew I was safe wearing it compared to other 'egg-shell' type helmets some of the overly fashion/image conscience riders wear.

With that many excellent helmets you are bound to live long enough to die in an old folks home.

Has anyone tried a helmet with a photochromic visor? Are they worth the money?
