Hey guys , i reckon it's just about time for a new ride and have been wondering what security people take when selling there hog from home? I've heard of a few "potential " buyer's taking bikes for test rides and they never return .  What do other people do/recomend when selling ?
    Cheers.

Tell the insurance company to add an unnamed rider  to the policy, that usually increases the excess. When a buyer comes for a ride advise them of the excess, get them to sign a simple agreement informing them they are liable for the excess in a claim. They sign, you sign and if possible your Mrs, mate, etc witness them signing. GET THEIR LICENCE, confirm as best as possible it is the person standing in front of you. Take a photo of both sides of the licence and send him. Hopefully he never returns as my bike is insured for $29500 and is only worth $17-$18k as a sale. LOL

about all you can do is have Comprehensive cover.

This is a true story, mate of mine about 6 or so years ago was selling his Mitsubishi Evo. Bloke seemed genuine, took a test drive, placed a $500 deposit.

Came back 2 days later with an ANZ bank cheque, all good, signed the paperwork and old mate drove off into the sunset. Went to the bank to deposit the cheque and the teller is confused, get's the manager, it looks legit but the codes don't line up at all.

License and the Bank cheque were both fake! Even Anz bank were astounded by the efforts this guy went to.

Shannons fucked him around for months, eventually got paid out.

If you’re looking at getting a new bike, get a trade in price first, plenty of good deals out there and no risk.

    really
there are already threads on this topic
but in the interest of debate

would you allow test drive of a car, your bike is not that special, it's a Harley, if you are selling it, it is even less special
as mine is insured, I'd let them test ride as my bikes would have been under my arse for many years, so it is not the new fan-dangle thing people are looking for

LOL Thought i was the cranky old cunt! Yes agree on both points! People wank on about how special a Harley is , mine is worth more written off or stolen than as a trade or a sale!

So you had no idea if it had a gear left in the gearbox or that the frame was straight other than a look...

A few ex US, bought one 3 weeks ago, few photos and a short video. Never been disappointed, not going over to see it till mid July, is this living dangerously ? More risk on the I5 peak hour. The guy I bought from is in mid eighty's unloading some from a collection.
You should get the vibes selling or buying.

I've never test ridden any bike I've bought. Four Harleys, three jappas, two Triumphs and a Norton. Four new, six used.

No buyer has ever asked to test ride a bike I was selling.

Has it ever puzzled you why car and bike dealers put demos on...perhaps you could suggst they stop doing this and save themselves some $ or maybe your just representing a very very small percentage of buyers perhaps?

Why would it puzzle me? I'm not them. I'm me, and this is what I do. YMMV.

I'm with Paul Bronco on this one though i must say - Ive always test ridden

You can tell a lot about the care a bike gets from where its garaged i believe

Thats where the true answer lays....if my bike was not insured i would not allow a ride, and i would not ride it myself!
