Idling problem

Techs have failed, so putting it to the brains trust.

The bike is a 2012 Wide Glide 103.

Symptom 1./ When starting, sometimes the revs are up around 1500 for a few seconds before coming down to the normal 1000.

Symptom 2./ This is intermittent, doesn't always happen. The bike runs fine for about half an hour, then starts idling around 1500 while on a trailing throttle or while coming to a stop, but returns to a normal idle when the wheels stop turning. The idle won't drop unless the wheels stop.

Symptom 3./ Same as Symptom 2 except that when on a trailing throttle or coming to a stop, the revs drop to 500 - 600. Sometimes this continues when the wheel stops moving and I have to throttle up to keep it from dying, other times it recovers to a normal idle when the wheels stop.

There are no stored error messages, no engine or electrical warning lights.

The local shop had a go, couldn't find the problem.

I've cleaned the IAC, and I'll be replacing the intake manifold seals and IAC today with new units.

Anyone have any ideas before put it up for sale?

    1.  This may be normal.  My 883 with a Thundermax does this each time.  Start her up and the revs go high for about 2-3 secs and then settles on the fast warm-up idle.
    2.  Replace the TPS sensor on the throttle body.  its cheap and take a couple of mins and can play havoc with idle when its on the way out.  The first 1/8th of throttle usage gets used a LOT on a harley and wears out.

    you have an intake leak
follow the manual with new seals, the air cleaner backing plate has to be in position when the intake manifold is tighten up (centered/position on heads)

Vaseline is best, also make sure sure manifold clamps are on the right way. Can be fiddly

For peace of mind they can test wiring from IAC or other sensors back to ECM. If bike runs well outside of idle then everything else fine.

Smokey if you want to see if it's an intake leak spray around the intake flanges etc while it's running at idle, if it flares up or stumbles it's leaking.
The IAC can sometimes be clean but still not operate correctly so getting that out of the way would be my number 2 from checking for leaks.
Hook up the dongle and check the TPS live if you get that far.

IAC steps if you have PV (or other suitable device)
speak to dealer about how the manifold is installed, it is crucial

take the IAC out turn ignition on and on on handlebar and the IAC will cycle, nothing else can be wrong with it.

I found that the wiring and sensors are very good quality, reliable and fault would be damage to wire.

Had similar issue on my FXDWG, start fine, after 30mins or going for ride when you get back to idle situation (traffic lights, intersections etc) you notice the incorrect idle.   seals out of whack just a smidge

Things can be clean and be worn out, what's inside the IAC one should ask, I'd near bet a nurry that's what it is but hey it's not in my shed.

    Q. Why did the walrus go to the Tupperware party
    A. He was looking for a tight seal.

Boom boom. Here every Monday. Try the veal.

Good luck smokey, it might take a couple of goes with the intake seals.
Make sure air cleaner backing plate is bolted to heads

Hi mate, you dont have an IAC, you have a TMAP sensor. The guys are probably right with the air leak but you can also check the engine temperature sensor (screwed in the back of the front cylinder head), clean the crankshaft position sensor ( in front of the oil filter). You may have a fault with the TPS also. Had similar issues recently with my SG. Ask me why I prefer Shovels and Evo's!

Can't remove the left side allen bolts in the manifold. I've removed top motor mount and horn for access but though some of my allen keys fit, I can't get enough room for a full 1/6 turn. Time for beer.

you can get special made for the job, or make one you have fit.

Ball end key or the Harley tool, can cut a bit off the key, put it in the bolt, get a spanner on that, lots of ways to skin this cat.

I dont reckon you are taking this idling problem seriously steelo.
And what the fuck is an IAC anyway?   I could hazard a guess but I dont want to appear stupid.
OK,  I will take a shot.  Intake Air Control. ?

Sounds like youve got the right attitude for this job Smokey.
You dont want to be going in rip tear bust and fucking things up.
As G M alluded to there are a few tricks to get the " CAPSCREW " out.
